John Henry Carey, Jr., of Chelsea, Massachusetts, formerly of Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2026, at the Soldiers’ Home in Chelsea. He was 84.
Born on June 12, 1942, in Providence, Rhode Island, John was the beloved son of John H. Carey and Eleanor Mary (Shea) Carey.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, John served honorably from January 25, 1962, to January 22, 1965, as an Engineer Missile Equipment Specialist. He was assigned to the 2nd Armored Division Guided Missile Group, part of the legendary 2nd Armored Division, “Hell on Wheels.” During the height of the Cold War, his unit maintained tactical missile readiness as part of America’s battlefield nuclear deterrence mission in Europe. John received several commendations in recognition of his dedicated military service.
After completing his Army service, John began a career in manufacturing, where his mechanical aptitude and engineering skills helped him advance into management positions at several Rhode Island manufacturing companies. During these years, he started a family while continuing to build his career. Determined to further his education, John later returned to school and earned a business degree from Johnson & Wales College in Rhode Island. He took great pride in solving problems, working with his hands, and applying the practical knowledge, discipline, and leadership he developed during his military service throughout his professional life.
John had a lifelong love of sailing, jazz, NFL football, world travel, and Irish history and culture. He was endlessly curious about the world and enjoyed learning about history, exploring new places, and tackling hands-on projects that challenged his ingenuity. He will also be remembered for his quick wit and dry Irish sense of humor.
John is survived by his two sons, Todd Patrick Carey of Santa Monica, California, and Brian Michael Carey of Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was a proud grandfather to Nathaniel Rian Carey and Jason Michael Carey, the sons of Brian and Tara Carey.
John will be remembered for his service to his country, his craftsmanship, his quiet determination, and the love he had for his family. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him, and may his spirit live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
