Obituary

Rene R. Bergeron, Sr., 87, of Woonsocket died peacefully Saturday July 18, 2026 at Hope Health Hospice Center in Providence. He was the loving husband of Florence “Flo” Irene Bergeron. Rene and Flo were married on September 5, 1960 at Holy Family Church in Woonsocket and spent nearly 66 years mutually devoted to each other. Flo was Rene’s steadfast and loving caregiver for over 20 years while living up to their vows of “in sickness and in health”.
Born and raised in Woonsocket he was a son of the late Leo and Alice (Bachand) Bergeron. He was a resident of the city for most of his life. Rene also resided in North Smithfield for over 13 years before returning to Woonsocket in recent years.
Rene worked at Quincy Dye Company and was later employed with Guilford Industries Corp. in Douglas, MA for many years before retiring.
Rene was a longtime communicant of St. Joseph’s Parish. He was a staunch Boston Red Sox fan, standing by his boys of summer through thick and thin. Rene enjoyed time outside while gardening and fishing. Indoors he kept active while bowling, playing cards or partaking in the occasional trip to casinos to try his luck.
Rene’s most cherished times were spent with family especially with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews as he had the reputation of being among one of their favorites. Affectionately known as “Grampy Ray-Ray”, he had a bright and cheerful manner all the while wearing his memorable beaming smile. Rene will be remembered for his love for his family and the friendly kindness he showed to everyone he met.
In addition to his wife of nearly 66 years, Rene is survived by their sons Daniel Bergeron and his wife Bonny of Felton, Delaware and Timothy Bergeron and his wife Amy of Cumberland. He was the father of the late Rene R. Bergeron, Jr. who passed away in 2016. Rene was the proud grandfather of Brittany Oakey, Derrick Bergeron, Daniel Bergeron, Jr., Timothy James Bergeron and Keaton Bergeron and great-grandfather of Finnegan, Oliver and Ava Renee Bergeron and Jacey Faye Oakey. He was the brother of Robert Bergeron, Jeannette Lemire and the late Henri, Leo and Roland Bergeron, Rita Couture and Pauline Paine. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their families.
Everyone is welcome to gather to remember, honor and pray for Rene at visiting hours and funeral services on Wednesday July 22, 2026 from 8:30-9:30 am at Menard-Lacouture Funeral Home, 127 Carrington Ave. Woonsocket followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Joseph’s Church, 1200 Mendon Rd. Woonsocket. Rene will be laid to rest at Resurrection Cemetery in Cumberland. In lieu of flowers, and memory of Rene’s kind and giving spirit, the family suggests that memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
