BUXTON & BIDDEFORD-Jeanette "Nicia" Washington, 55, passed away suddenly on July 6,
2026, at the Maine Medical Center in Biddeford, Maine. Nicia was born on July 3, 1971, in Portland, Maine, to the late Andrew Lee,
and Elrie (Register) Washington, Sr.
Nicia lived a vibrant, full, and deeply impactful life. Though born with special needs, Nicia was a graduate of Bonney Eagle High School, and never let physical limitations define her spirit. She possessed an infectious joy, and a unique ability to light up any room. For the past 28 years, Nicia resided at The Spurwink Group Home in Saco, Maine, a loving local group home, where she built a second family. She thrived in this community, forming deep friendships with fellow residents and the dedicated staff who
provided tender care to her over the years.
For many years, Nicia worked in Falmouth at a Greenhouse, and for Tom's of Maine. She lived lite to the absolute fullest. She loved to travel, and was an athlete with the Special Olympics participating in the Skiing and Summer Olympic Events. Nicia taught everyone around her that a meaningful life is measured not by physical abilities, but by the volume of
love, laughter, and resilience she shared with her family and friends. Nicia is survived by her loving mother Elrie (Register) Washington, who was her biggest fan and advocate, and will miss the time they spent together; her four brothers Andrew, Jr., Kelvin, Khesir, and Robbin Washington, all of Maine; 8 nieces and nephews, and 3 great-nieces and 1 great-nephew; several cousins and extended family, as well as her dearest group home family and friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved
ather, Andrew Lee Washington, Sr. who loved Nicia beyond measure.
A celebration of Jeanette "Nicia's" beautiful life will be held on Monday July 20, 2026 with visitation from 11 AM – 12 noon, followed by a 12-noon funeral service at the Chad E. Poitras Cremation and Funeral Service Chapel, 498 Long Plains Road (Rt. 22) in Buxton. Burial will follow at Forest City Cemetery in South Portland.
