Obituary

Lucille (Lucy) P. Langford
June 9, 1939 - July 5, 2026

Lucille (Lucy) Phillips Langford, 87, passed away Sunday, July 5th, after a sudden illness with her daughter, Sheila, and son-in-law, Bruce, by her side.

Lucy was born on June 9, 1939 in Monterey, Tennessee "where the Hilltops touch the Sky." She felt that was a great description of her hometown. Lucy was the oldest to five younger siblings and helped her Mama raise them. She attended a one-room schoolhouse and loved to tell stories about her teacher - Miss Claudie and her special group of friends and close walk back home.

Lucy married and moved to Anderson in 1957, where she lived for 69 years - yet whenever asked where she was from, she would always reply with a big smile, I'm originally from Tennessee. Lucy never lost her accent, people would ask, where are you from? I know it's somewhere down south. Lucy was always happy to answer Tennessee and to chat about her favorite state.

Lucy worked at Ward-Stilson Embroidery Shop and discussed being told she was ready to prepare high end items, including a mink coat with initials sewn into the satin lining. As a stay at home Mom until her daughter, Sheila, was in fifth grade, Lucy served as an Assistant Girl Scout Leader and worked on several fundraisers at the elementary school. As a seamstress, Lucy made many of Sheila's clothes, including the prettiest Easter jacket ever, one that Sheila still has. Lucy loved to sew and later learned to knit making beautiful scarves and afghans.

Lucy's move back into the job market began at Barber Manufacturing in Anderson. After a brief time there, Lucy was hired at Guide Lamp, Division of General Motors, where she completed her thirty years working from 1970 until 2000.

Lucy loved to travel - vacations down south included trips to Myrtle Beach, Gulf Shores as well as out west to California, Arizona and Washington State. Her family enjoyed many weeks at Dale Hollow Lake by her sister Delois, often a highlight of the summer. Lucy learned to water-ski there and felt she had won a Gold Medal!

After she retired Lucy traveled frequently to Tennessee to stay with and care for her mother. She made these trips for a decade going for several months-long visits, knowing her Mama needed her. She also enjoyed traveling with her daughter and son-in-law to Shipshewana and Brown County here in Indiana, but particularly enjoyed traveling back to Tennessee to visit family and spending time in the southeast either in the mountains or at the beach.

Lucy was a great Cook. She made the BEST Chocolate Pie ever. And, her "pretty breakfast" was always something to enjoy with all of the fixins - including bacon, sausage, gravy and most importantly Chocolate Gravy - the perfect finishing touch!

Lucy moved to College Park in 2008 and enjoyed meeting new neighborhood friends. She was part of a small group of ladies who regularly played cards and loved chatting with her neighbors at the mailbox about anything and everything. Lucy served on the Board of Directors for nine years and also coordinated the Ladies' Monthly Congenial Luncheons.

Lucy's humor was contagious; she shared many fun stories, jokes and pranks over the years. She loved sharing about her time growing up.
She was an awesome Mama to her daughter and from the time Sheila was young until recently always made sure everything was planned and coordinated including lots of Mother/Daughter activities.

Lucy is survived by her daughter, Sheila (Dr. Bruce) MacMurray; step grandsons, Dr. Nick (Lorena Trevino) MacMurray, Dr. Ben (Heather) MacMurray; two step great grandsons, Jonas and Jamie MacMurray; sisters, Delois Randolph and Juanita Pierce and Emogene Carr; and many nieces and nephews. Lucy was preceded in death by two brothers: Dwight Phillips and Doug Phillips.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 18, 2026 at 2 p.m. at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Lucy loved her daughter's Beagles (Granddogs). Libby & Sam often visited and were so happy to visit their "Grandma." They would get so excited whenever they arrived at her driveway.
