Obituary

Eugenio M. Medeiros, 70, known to all who loved him as "Gene," of Dracut, passed away on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at Lowell General Hospital - Saints Campus in Lowell following a recent diagnosis of lung cancer.

Born on December 10, 1955, in São Miguel, Portugal, Gene was the son of the late Joao Medeiros Silva and the late Guilhermina Tavares Silva, both of the Azores. He came to the United States on October 30, 1970, beginning a new chapter of his life with the energy and spirit that would come to define him. He began his education in the Azores and continued at the Rogers School upon his arrival in this country.

In his earlier years in Lowell, Gene was a proud member of the Red's Club, where he played soccer in the early 1980s. He was a natural athlete with a love of competition, and those years were filled with camaraderie and sport. He was also a familiar face at the former Bullwinkle's on Lawrence Street, where he honed his considerable skills at the pool table. A lover of cards and Keno, Gene had a gift for games and an easy confidence that made him a welcome presence wherever he went. In his younger days, he even worked as a model, a testament to his charm and good looks.

Gene later relocated to Florida, where he would spend approximately 18 years. It was there that he built a career as a golf caddie, a role he filled with dedication and expertise. Over the years, he had the distinction of caddying for many well-known and celebrated figures, earning a reputation as a knowledgeable and personable presence on the course. His love of golf never left him, and it remained one of his great passions throughout his life. When he returned to Lowell he continued working as Caddie at Vesper Country Club for many years.

Above all, Gene was a man of character and humor. He loved to dance, and no gathering was complete without him finding his way to the floor. He was a jokester at heart, delighting in teasing the people he loved most, and those on the receiving end of his good-natured ribbing knew it was simply his way of showing affection. He was a member of both the Red's Club and the Blue's Club.

Gene is survived by his children, Justin Medeiros and his wife Jamie of Virginia, April Medeiros of Boston, and Sara Tortorello of Florida; his grandchildren, Geneviene Hudson, Lydia and Brody Medeiros, Addison and Natalie Houtari, and Taylor, Carson and Gabriel Tortorello; his siblings, Anna Medeiros of Somerset, Carlos Medeiros and his wife Maria of Lowell, Ana Arcand and her husband Robert of Dracut, Joe Silva and his wife Danielle Martineau of Dracut, Elia Medeiros of Nashua, Angelina Silva of Melbourne, Florida, and Diana Pereira and her husband David of Billerica; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews, including his niece Elizabeth, with whom he shared a particularly special bond, and a wide circle of dear friends.

He was the brother of the late Maria Medeiros and the late Maria Brum, and the brother-in-law of the late Gilberto Medeiros.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours for Gene on Sunday, June 28, 2026, from 3 to 5 p.m. at McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland Street, Lowell, MA 01852. A service of remembrance will follow at the conclusion of visiting hours at 5 p.m.
