South Portland – Jo-Ann Marie Wiles, 84, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2026, from injuries sustained in a fall.
She was surrounded by the love of her family and leaves behind a legacy of compassion, kindness, and devotion to others.
Jo-Ann was born on December 10, 1941, in Springfield, Massachusetts, to Lucy Melvina Green and Floyd Carty Welch while her parents were on a trucking road trip. She was raised in the Cash Corner neighborhood of South Portland, by Fanny and Walter Smith, who provided her with a loving home and strong values that she carried throughout her life.
Jo-Ann met and married the love of her life, Keith Wiles. Together they shared 32 wonderful years of marriage until Keith's passing in 2004. Their love and devotion to one another remained an inspiration to their family. A woman with a generous heart, Jo-Ann dedicated her life to caring for others. She worked as a home care worker and spent 32 years with Catholic
Charities, where she touched countless lives through her compassion, patience, and unwavering commitment to those in need. Her desire to help others extended far beyond her profession and was evident in every aspect of her life. Above all else, Jo-Ann cherished her family. She was the proud mother of three daughters, Michele, Donna, and Julie. In addition to raising her daughters, she lovingly raised her granddaughter Amy, who held a special place in her heart. Jo-Ann's family was her greatest joy, and she treasured every moment spent with them. She especially enjoyed spending weekends with her daughter Michele, searching for treasures at yard sales and thrift shops. These outings were more than a hobby—they were cherished opportunities to share laughter, stories, and precious time together.
Jo-Ann was predeceased by her beloved husband, Keith Wiles, and her daughter, Julie Green, who passed away in 2017. She is survived by her daughters, Michele Trynor and her husband Ralph of South Portland, and Donna Williams of Minot; her grandchildren, Amy Eastman and her husband Jeffrey of Vermont, Bryan Cairns and his wife Amanda of Standish, Eric Ames of South Portland, Dylan Sargent of Arundel, and Corrie Sargent of Lewiston. She also leaves behind 10 great grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense pride and happiness.
Jo-Ann dedicated her life to caring for others and instilled that same spirit of compassion and service in her daughters. Her kindness, strength, and loving nature will be remembered by all who knew her.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Gosnell House for the exceptional care, comfort, and compassion they provided during Jo-Ann's final hours.
A celebration of Jo-Ann's life will be held at a later date. Interment will take place at Seaside Cemetery in Cape Elizabeth, where she will rest beside her beloved husband, Keith. Though she is no longer with us, the love she shared, the lives she touched, and the memories she created will remain forever in the hearts of her family and friends. She will be deeply loved, dearly remembered, and sadly missed.
