Obituary

GORHAM- James Phillip Rines, 70, passed away on June 11, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on April 8, 1956, in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, Jim was the son of the late Glidden and Pauline Rines. He remained deeply connected to his Maine roots throughout his life and was known for his hardworking nature, loyalty, and dedication to those he loved.

Jim built a career through determination and perseverance. In his younger years, he worked at Mill Cove Lobster Pound before spending 17 years with Skoal U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company. Over the years he worked for several funeral homes including Brookings-Smith Funeral Home and Chad E. Poitras Cremation and Funeral Service. He later concluded his career as Manager of Plummer’s Ace Hardware in Gorham, Maine, where he was respected by coworkers and customers alike for his knowledge, dependability, and friendly demeanor.

Above all, Jim was devoted to his family. He is survived by his son, Peter Rines; his daughter, Katie Rines; and his beloved grandson, Jacob Rines. In his final years, few things brought Jim more joy than his grandson Jacob, whose laughter, visits, and love meant the world to him. Jim’s love for his children was constant and unwavering. No matter where life took them, he made sure they knew they were loved, ending nearly every day the same way—with a goodnight message. It was a simple gesture, but one he never missed, and it became a lasting reminder of his love and devotion as a father. He also leaves behind his former spouse and lifelong best friend, Beth Rines. Though their marriage ended, their friendship endured, and they remained an important part of each other’s lives until the very end. In recent years, Jim became a member of Buxton Masonic Lodge #115 AF&AM.

Jim is also survived by his brothers, Neddy Rines, Richard Rines, and Johnny Rines. He was predeceased by his brother, Boyd Rines, as well as his parents, Glidden and Pauline Rines. He also leaves behind many cherished family members, including brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

Jim had a gift for bringing people together. Whether through a favorite concert, a dinner shared around his table, or his much-anticipated annual Christmas party, he created opportunities for family and friends to connect, laugh, and make memories. Those gatherings reflected his generous spirit and the joy he found in spending time with the people he loved.

A devoted NASCAR fan, Jim never missed a race. One of his greatest joys was attending the Oxford 250 each year with his son, Peter—a cherished tradition that created lasting memories and reflected the special bond they shared.

Jim will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his strong work ethic, his sense of humor, and the quiet strength he showed throughout his life. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the physicians, nurses, and staff at Mercy Hospital for the exceptional care, compassion, and kindness they provided to Jim throughout the past several years. Their support meant more than words can express. Jim often spoke of the care he received and the genuine appreciation he had for those who helped him through some of life’s most challenging moments. The family will always be grateful for the dedication and comfort they provided.

In accordance with Jim’s wishes, there will be no traditional funeral service. Instead, because he never missed an opportunity to gather the people he loved, his family will honor his request with one final get-together in true Jim fashion. Family and friends will come together to share stories, laughter, and a traditional Maine lobster bake, celebrating a life well lived and a man who always knew how to bring people together. Details will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who knew Jim honor his memory by spending time with loved ones, sharing stories, and embracing the simple traditions that bring people together.
