Mary (Gallagher) McEleney, age 89, passed away peacefully at her home in Medford on June 2, 2026, after a short illness.
Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband, Cornelius (“Connie”) McEleney. She was the loving mother of Teresa McEleney of Medford; Cornelius (“Neil”) McEleney and his wife, Maureen McAuley, of Atkinson, NH; John McEleney and his wife, Christine, of Reading; Mary Ward and her husband, Jay, of Marlborough; Cathy McEleney and her late husband, Charles Waters, of Milford; and Kevin McEleney of Medford. She was the cherished grandmother of Aisling McEleney, Sinead McEleney, Patrick McEleney, Shannon Ward, and Erin Ward. Mary is also survived by her siblings Ann, Breege, Jim, Tom, Sean, and Steven, as well as her many dear friends and neighbors on King Avenue.
Mary was born in Greaghglass, Aughnasheelin, County Leitrim, Ireland, on May 22, 1937, to Anne and John Gallagher. At the age of 18, she traveled alone to the United States to begin a new life filled with family, dancing, travel, and, above all, love.
Mary met her husband, Connie, at an Irish dance at Hibernian Hall in Roxbury in 1958, and they were married in 1960. They enjoyed more than 60 years of marriage before Connie passed away in 2022.
During their long life together, Mary and Connie attended countless Irish dances throughout the Boston area and were well known for their abilities on the dance floor. They traveled extensively, visiting Australia, China, and England, and enjoyed adventures that included traversing the Panama Canal by boat, cruising on the Columbia River, and seeing western Canada aboard the Rocky Mountaineer train. There were also many cherished trips home to Ireland to visit family and friends.
But Mary’s favorite trip was the short walk to the front porch of the Victorian home in Medford that she and Connie lovingly restored together. She could be found there on most spring, summer, and fall days, either rocking in her chair with a cup of tea, tending to her many plants, or, on occasion, taking a little nap on the couch. Her presence on the porch was a cornerstone of the neighborhood. People would stop by to sit and chat for a few minutes, while others simply waved from the street as they passed.
Mary was an ever-loving mother and grandmother (lovingly known as “Nana”) whose love language was food. No meal was complete until you had politely declined her offers of a third or fourth helping. Nana’s willingness to prepare an individual breakfast for each guest—whether blueberry pancakes, French toast, or a perfectly poached egg—was known well beyond her family. And then, most memorably, there were her famous Irish biscuits (made without raisins for only a select few). While it was always a special treat to be there when they came out of the oven, there were always plenty to bring home for tomorrow and enough to share with neighbors, friends, and relatives.
Mary’s warmth, generosity, and love for family, friends, and community will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Relatives & friends are invited to attend her funeral from the Breslin Funeral Home, 610 Pleasant St., Malden on Friday June 12th at 9 AM followed by her Funeral Mass celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 600 Pleasant St., Malden at 10 AM. Services will conclude with interment in Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Thursday June 11th from 4-7 PM.
