WEBSTER – Edward P. Hanc, 83, of 87 Worcester Road, died Friday, Sept. 15, in Hubbard Regional Hospital after being stricken ill at home.
He leaves his wife of 58 years, Julia N. (Lichorowiec) Hanc; a son, Michael E. Hanc of Hopedale; a daughter, Barbara A. Anderson of Mannheim, Germany; 2 grandchildren; nephews and nieces.
He was born in Webster, son of Peter and Josephine (Zurowski) Hanc, and lived here all his life. He graduated from Saint Joseph’s Elementary School and then Bartlett High School in 1941. He studied to be a machinist at Cole Trade High School in Southbridge.
He was an Army veteran of World War II in both the European and Pacific Theaters. He served for more than 3 years with a signal battalion, and was awarded a bronze service star.
Mr. Hanc was emloyed for 35 years as a machine tester and national service representative, setting up machinery in plants throughout the country for the former Heald Machine Company in Worcester.
Long active in town affairs, he was elected and served two terms as selectman from 1990 to 1996. He was elected to the Webster Charter Commission in 1986 and the Revised Charter Commission in 1991. He was the Precinct 3 town meeting representative for 2 terms. He was also appointed to the Webster Youth and Recreation Committee.
He was a member of Saint Joseph Basilica, the Webster-Dudley American Legion Post #184, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The funeral, with military honors, will be held Thursday, Sept. 21, from the Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home, 340 School St., with a Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Joseph Basilica, 53 Whitcomb St. Burial will be in St. Joseph Garden of Peace. A calling hour will be from 8:15 to 9:15 AM Thursday, Sept. 21, in the funeral home. Donations in his memory may be made to the Friends of St. Joseph School Fund, 53 Whitcomb St., Webster, MA 01570.
