Obituary

Theresa Thomas-Rivers, a true force of nature and a bright light in the lives of everyone who knew her, passed away on May 17, 2026, at the age of 66. Born in Boston, MA, Theresa was the beloved second child of Loretta Brooks of Portsmouth, VA, and the late Charles Thomas.

Theresa graduated from the Jeremiah E. Burke High School. After many years of dedicated service, she retired from the Boston Public Schools’ Food and Nutrition Services team. Never one to sit still, she was also a familiar, warm presence at Stop & Shop in Jamaica Plain, where she worked for many years until her passing.

To know Theresa was to know a whirlwind of energy, love, and laughter. She was the undisputed “Facebook Queen,” keeping everyone connected, updated, and entertained. Blessed with a heart of gold and a flair for the dramatic, she was famously, fashionably late - but whenever she arrived, she was the life of the party, and no family gathering was complete without her famous fried cabbage and magnificent macaroni salad!

Family meant the absolute world to Theresa. She loved each of her nieces and nephews individually and in a special way, ensuring they always knew how much they mattered to her. As for her grandchildren, they were her ultimate pride and joy, inheriting the boundless love she poured into her family every single day.

In recent years, Theresa embraced a beautiful spiritual transformation, growing from her former “hardcore” self into a dedicated student of the Bible who loved sharing truths with childhood friends. She found immense joy and a profound faith in the power of prayer to Jehovah God - whether seeking comfort or safe travels. Her determination culminated just weeks ago when she proudly shared her plans to speak with the elders about taking steps toward baptism, a heartfelt commitment she warmly reaffirmed in her final conversations with her mother and her Auntie Margaret. She looked forward to enjoying Jehovah’s promise of everlasting life in Paradise, where her journey will be even more amazing!

Theresa is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Nathaniel Sr. and Nikki Thomas; her mother, Loretta Brooks; three grandchildren, Nathaniel Jr., Jabarri, and Chantely; and two great-grandsons, Keilan Smith and Prince Nathaniel. She is also survived by her sister, Michele Jones, her three brothers, Mark White (Robin), Keith Thomas (Sharon), and Don Thomas (Sarah), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lawrence Rivers; her father, Charles Thomas; her grandchild, Bouldrea Ware; and her brother-in-law, Jerome Jones, Sr.
