Obituary

Shirley (Courtney) Avery, 87, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026. Shirley was born to Matthew Courtney and Hilda (Taylor) Courtney, in Burnt Islands, Newfoundland, Canada. Shirley immigrated to the United States in 1957, settling in Cambridge, Massachusetts and eventually residing in New Hampshire for almost 30 years. Wherever life brought her, Shirley always carried with her, and shared with those around her, the warmth and spirit of her birthplace.

Shirley was a woman of deep compassion, best known for her immense love for animals—especially her beloved cats, Faith and Princess, who brought her endless joy and comfort. Her kind heart extended far beyond her own home; she was a faithful and generous donor to numerous charitable causes dedicated to protecting animals as well as St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Shirley is survived by her devoted son, Kenny Avery, and his wife, Diane, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. She is also survived by two estranged children, Donna Santamaria, of Southboro, Massachusetts, and Paul Avery, of Pelham, New Hampshire.

Shirley was a proud grandmother to Jenna Avery and Nicholas Avery. She was also blessed with six cherished great-grandchildren: Piper, Peyton, Paxton, Isabella, Sofia, and Benjamin.

Shirley is predeceased by two beloved sons, Robert Avery Jr. and Raymond Avery; her two sisters, Clara Hatcher and Bessie Seymour; and her brothers, Thomas Courtney and Robert Courtney.

The family would like to extend a huge thank you to Ward Rehab and all the wonderful staff.

A celebration of life will be held privately at a later date. In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Shirley’s lifelong passions, donations in Shirley's name can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to a local animal shelter of your choice.
