Arthur David Wahl, known to all who loved him as Art, passed away on May 15, 2026. He was 88 years old.
Art was born on September 4, 1937, in Floral Park, New York, to Art and Helen Wahl. He went on to earn his master's degree in education from Colgate University, setting the course for a career dedicated to helping young people find their way. In 1960, he married Linda Heitman, and in 1962 the couple made the move to Laguna Beach, California, a place that would become the backdrop for so many of Art's greatest chapters.
Art became a charter member of the guidance counseling staff at Laguna Beach High School, where he helped shape the lives of countless students over the years. He also served as the school's head tennis coach from 1964 through 1984, bringing his passion for the sport and his gift for mentorship together on the court. An exceptional tennis player in his own right, Art led by example and inspired generations of young athletes.
Beyond the classroom and the tennis court, Art was a true outdoorsman. He could often be found biking along the coast, kayaking in calm waters, hiking through the hills, or setting up camp under the stars. His camera was rarely far from his reach, and he had a photographer's eye for capturing the beauty of the natural world he loved so deeply. That love translated into action through his years of advocacy for the Laguna Beach Greenbelt, where he worked to preserve the open spaces and wild landscapes that meant so much to him and his community. He was also an avid traveler, always curious about the next destination and the stories it held.
Art is survived by his loving partner, Bali Thorn; his son, Jeff Wahl; his daughter, April (Ray) Robitaille; and his beloved grandchildren, Paul, Demi, and Nick (Carla) Robitaille.
Art lived a full and generous life, guided by a quiet faith in the goodness of the world around him. He left every place, and every person, a little better than he found them. May he rest in the peace of the natural beauty he cherished so dearly.
In lieu of flowers, Art’s family asks that you make a donation to the Laguna Canyon Foundation.
A celebration of Art's life will be held in Laguna Beach at a later date. Details will be shared by the family once arrangements are finalized.
