
Joseph Furtado, 86, of New Bedford, passed away on Sunday, May 17, 2026 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of the late Ella G. (Tripp) Furtado.
Mr. Furtado was born in Fall River, son of the late Jose and Mary (Gaspar) Furtado and had resided in Dartmouth for most of his life. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served his country in the U.S. Navy. Prior to retirement, he worked as a repair foreman for the Massachusetts Highway Department and was commercial fisherman. One of his favorite things to do when he could was fresh and salt water fishing. He enjoyed yard sales, crossword puzzles and dancing. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Survivors include his children: Joseph Furtado, Jr. and his wife Christine of Redlands, CA, Theresa Walls and her partner Butch Charpentier of New Bedford and Barbara Ribeiro of New Bedford; his companion: Barbara Bettencourt of Westport; 8 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; a great great granddaughter on the way; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late George Furtado and Dolores Ann Moss, grandfather of the late Anthony Furtado and brother of the late Judith Rebello.
Funeral service to which relatives and friends are invited will be Thursday, May 21, 2026 at the Potter Funeral Home at 11:00 A.M.
Calling hours Wednesday from 4-7 P.M.
Interment in Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport.
