Sydney “Syd” John Thompson, 77, of Manchester, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 11, 2026, at the High Pointe Hospice House in Haverhill, Massachusetts, surrounded by family and the people he loved most.
Born and raised in Walsall, England, Syd was the beloved son of John and Hilda Thompson. He was one of six children and survived by his loving sisters Joan, Janice and Denise. He was predeceased by his sisters Mavis and Sylvia. In 1974, he immigrated to the United States and built a life centered around hard work, family, friendship, and generosity.
Syd retired from the New Hampshire Union Leader after many years of dedicated service. In retirement, he went on to start and build a successful transportation company, where he formed countless friendships and meaningful relationships that lasted throughout his life. He was known for his warm personality, sense of humor, loyalty, and ability to connect with people wherever he went.
Above all else, Syd was devoted to his family. He was a proud and loving father to his daughter, Joanne Whitfield and his sons, Christopher Thompson and Colin Thompson. He was predeceased by his daughter Maxine, whom he loved dearly and carried in his heart always.
Syd was an adored grandfather to George, Wyatt, Caitlyn, Rayna, Griffin, Charlie, Gemma and Magdalena. His grandchildren were the center of his world, and he was known for spoiling them every chance he got and upsetting their parents. He also leaves behind three cherished great-grandchildren, Bentley, Emma, and Miles.
Syd had many hobbies and passions including playing cribbage and backgammon, gardening, fishing, camping, bird watching, biking and ghost hunting. He loved to share experiences with people who had similar interests.
Syd will be remembered for his kindness, resilience, generosity, and the lasting impact he made on the many lives he touched. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, friendship, and family that will continue through all who knew him.
The family would like to thank the amazing team at the Elliot Hospital in Manchester, NH who cared for Syd throughout his battle with cancer. We’d especially like to thank and acknowledge Dr. Curtis Quinn who helped Syd live many extra happy and fulfilling years.
