Obituary

Sandra “Sandy” Marie Whittemore, 66, of Blackstone, MA, formerly of Quincy, MA, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2025 at South Shore Hospital.

Born in Quincy, Massachusetts, on January 7, 1959 to Philip and Marijean (Vigneault) Whittemore, Sandy attended Quincy High School excelling in mathematics and athletics. In her free time she would sew her own clothing, a skill that would aid her in her professional life several decades later. Upon graduating in 1977, she worked at Hancock Bank and Trust following her father’s footsteps but ultimately dedicated over 30 years as a well respected caregiver and later supervisor in the sewing department at Wrentham Developmental Center for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. She was part of the center’s softball league for many years playing the position of catcher. She loved the clients she cared for as if they were members of her own family, often reading to them, taking them for walks, and joking around with them. She worked there until her retirement.

Sandy was a woman of many talents. She loved to sew, bake, garden, kayak, ride her motorcycle, and compete in pool at the former Boilermakers in Woonsocket, RI. She enjoyed doing her sudoku puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, playing cribbage with friends, and browsing antique shops. She adored antique furniture, knick knacks, and cookware, amassing quite the collection. She was an avid football fan, but only for the New England Patriots, often hosting Superbowl parties for her friends. She volunteered her time at her friend Nicole’s place of work, The Community Care Alliance in Woonsocket RI, doing sewing projects and aiding in reception duties during tax season. She spent nearly every Saturday with her older brother, Scott, and their long time friend, Brian, trying out different cheeses and concoctions the two men came up with. Additionally, she really cherished the time that she spent with her children and her cat, Wolfie.

Sandy is survived by her two children: Joshua Baker and Nicole Baker of Quincy, MA; older brother Scott Whittemore and wife his Irene of Weymouth, MA; sister Shirley Whitaker and her husband Bruce of Fryeburg, ME; younger brother Steven Whittemore and his wife Kathleen of East Bridgewater, MA; uncle Richard Whittemore and his wife Fran of Canton, MA; niece, with whom she shared a birthday, Brittany; and numerous nephews.

In lieu of flowers and cards, donations can be made in Sandy’s name to the Glioblastoma Foundation at www.glioblastomafoundation.org.
