Obituary

Helen Proia Atamian 103, passed away in her sleep early on Sunday, February 22, 2026.

Helen was born on November 15,1922, in Newton, MA, the first of 6 daughters. She was the daughter of the late Louis Proia and Concetta (Cardone) Proia. She grew up in “The Lake” and lived in Newton until she moved to California with her husband, Zaven, and her two children in the early 1950’s. They lived there for many years before returning to Newton.

She was a part of “The Greatest Generation”, working at Raytheon with a high security clearance during World War II. She played an important role in supporting the morale of servicemen by using her station wagon to drive herself and other young women to social hours at the Navy Base, helping to organize dances and gatherings that provided support to sailors during a difficult time.

Helen lived a full and meaningful life. She was a gifted decorator, an amazing cook and a gracious host who loved feeding and entertaining family and friends. She loved dancing and was a talented Ball Room Dancer.

Helen is survived by her son, Louis C. Atamian and wife, Wendy, of West Newton, MA, and her daughter, Linda E. Atamian of Watertown, MA; her much loved grandchildren: Michelle Sullivan and husband, Mark, and Jake Atamian and wife, Aliya Khan; her precious great-grandson, Brady Sullivan, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her dear sisters: Lois Proia, Janet Piselli, Anne Tocci, Mary Ricciardi and Enis Piselli and her former husband, Zaven Atamian.

We are grateful we had her for so long and she is dearly missed. In lieu of flowers we ask that you consider an act of kindness towards yourself or another, or making amends with someone, life is short. Memorial Service to be held at the First Unitarian Universalist Society in Newton, 1326 Washington St., West Newton, MA on Saturday, June 13, 2026 at 1:00 PM.
