Obituary

ANDOVER—Marguerite A. (Walsh) Barton, 86 years old, a longtime resident of Lowell and Andover, died Saturday September 16th at Wingate at Andover, after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife for 54 years of Joseph F. Barton, who died in 1994.

She was born in Lawrence, on December 21, 1919, a daughter of the late David and Margaret (Morgan) Walsh. She received her early education at Saint Laurence School, in Lawrence and was a graduate of Lawrence High School, Class of 1936.

Mrs. Barton had been employed by Drs. Colson and Barry, of Lawrence, and later as an Office Manager by Capital Liquor Distributors, in Andover. She and her husband were avid football fans and New England Patriot season ticket holders for many years. They also worked together providing home health care services to the elderly during their early retirement years. She and her husband also enjoyed traveling, going to South America to visit their son in the Peace Corps, Ireland, and Australia to visit family and spent many winters in Florida with family and friends.

She was known for her charming personality and ability to make people smile. She was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church, Lowell, and held membership in the Women’s Guild and Prayer Group of that parish as well as the Catholic Daughters of America. She was considered the ‘jewel’ of her family.

Surviving her are a son: David F. Barton, and his wife Cindy, of Ogunquit, ME; a daughter: Anne M. Barton, and her husband Steven L. Smith, of Lowell; a daughter-in-law: Jennifer Barton Jones, of Boston, and Newport, RI; a granddaughter: Julie (Barton) Dorfneilsen, and her husband Whitney, of Natick; two great grandchildren: Natalie and Spencer Dorfneilsen; two sisters: Marie Busby, of North Andover; and Evelyn Begley, and her husband Kevin, of Methuen; a brother Edward Walsh, and his wife Marcy, of Goffstown, NH; also several beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was the mother of the late Joseph E. Barton who died in 2002, and sister of the late Marine Major David W. Walsh, Gertrude McLellan and John Walsh.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM on Tuesday, September 19th at the MAHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 187 Nesmith Street, (Rte. 38), Lowell. Her Funeral Mass to be offered Wednesday, September 20th, at 9 AM at the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH, Lowell. Burial in the Spring Grove Cemetery, Andover. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Joseph Barton Memorial Fund; 95 Gainsborough Street, #304; Boston, MA 02115.
