Obituary

Myron F. Simmons, Jr., 86, of Little Compton, peacefully passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2026 at home with family by his side. He was the husband of Phoebe E. (Champoux) Simmons for 64 blessed years.

Myron was born in Fall River, son of the late Myron F. Simmons, Sr. and the late Mary (Oliveira) Simmons and had been a lifelong resident of Little Compton. He graduated in 1958 from Josephine Wilbur School in Little Compton and then, spent time working for local contractor Colson Simmons before starting his own contracting business, MF Simmons, Inc. He was an active member of Acoaxet Chapel in Westport where he sang frequently and oversaw all building repairs and improvements. He was also a Little Compton Grange "Citizen of the Year" recipient.

Myron was very involved in Little Compton sports. He served as president and coach for the Little Compton Little League, coach for Little Compton Softball and was founder, president, coach and referee for the Little Compton Youth Basketball League. He was also a coach and an official for Youth Hockey. Myron played much of his baseball in the highly competitive Sunset League in Newport, RI. There, he was a clear standout and was even invited to try out for the Boston Red Sox.

He enjoyed bowling and was a Duckpin bowling champion. He was an avid golfer that cherished his time spent on the course with multiple generations of family and friends. Myron was the fiercest yet fairest competitor you would ever encounter, whether it was a game of driveway basketball "HORSE," Nerf ping pong at the kitchen table or any other competition he could come up with at the drop of a hat.

As a dedicated New England sports fan, Myron rooted for the Celtics, Red Sox & Bruins; but, when football season came around, it was all about the Cleveland Browns.

Survivors along with his wife include his daughter: Sharon Toppa and her husband Christopher of Tiverton; his son: Dean Simmons and his wife Cheryl of Tiverton and not by blood but by choice, David Couto and Earl Wordell; his grandchildren: Taylor Toppa, Christopher " C.J." Toppa, Cole Simmons, Joshua Simmons along with many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Doris Sawyer, Ethel Rodrigues, Phyllis Mello, Jeannette Gagne, Elizabeth Simmons and Ellen Rodrigues.

Myron’s family wishes to thank the endless number of family, friends and customers of Myron throughout his 86 truly blessed years! He cherished each and every one of you!

A celebration of life to which all are invited is being planned for this summer.
