NIANTIC: Alice E. Helgeson (nee Schwebach), 83, of Niantic, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2026, due to complications from dementia.
Alice was born on March 29, 1943, in Manhattan, New York, and raised in Queens. After graduating from Bryant High School in Astoria, she attended the Lenox Hill Hospital School of Nursing, earning her degree in 1963. This marked the beginning of a life defined by care, compassion, and service to others. In November 1964, she married the love of her life, Harold, and together they built a beautiful life in Bayside, New York, where they raised their three children.
Throughout her life, Alice was deeply involved in her community. She was active in her church, proudly served two terms as PTA president of P.S. 159, and was always eager to bring people together. She was an avid reader who loved to travel, socialize, and discover new restaurants, and she never missed an opportunity to enjoy the music of Elvis Presley. Above all, Alice cherished her friendships and had a remarkable gift for making new ones wherever she went. She made everyone around her feel like family. Always one to root for the underdog, she went the extra mile to help anyone in need, leaving a lasting impression of warmth and generosity on all who knew her.
For many years, Alice and Harold vacationed in Niantic, Connecticut, eventually choosing to make it their permanent home. There, surrounded by the water, Alice found peace and serenity.
Alice was predeceased by her parents, John and Iona Schwebach. She is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, Haold; her daughter Janet Martone and her husband, Charlie; her son Jeffrey and his wife, Stefanie; her daughter Amy Levi and her husband, Kris; and her six beloved grandchildren – Emma, Melina, Alexander, Chase, Karlyle, and Matthew – who were a constant source of pride and joy.
Memorial wake and funeral services will be announced at a later date.
Her spirit lives on in the laughter, love, and memories she shared with her family and friends.
