Obituary

Theodore A. Carmone Sr. passed away on March 29, 2026, after a seven-year battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis surrounded by his family, in his home in Mansfield at the age of 86.

Ted was a devoted husband to his wife Jean for 67 years. He and Jean met when he was 15 and she was 13 on Maple Ave. in Barrington, RI and have been in love ever since. Ted was a leader in the Boston area as a builder, but his legacy forever will be the family he and Jean built. Ted leaves behind his children, Theodore A. Carmone Jr. and his wife Olimpia (Mauro) Carmone, Marijean Kuhn and her husband Frank Kuhn, and Charles Carmone and his wife Jennifer (Parkyn) Carmone. Ted had six beloved grandchildren Theo Carmone and his wife Francesca (Eramo) Carmone, Rob Carmone (predeceased), Jenna (Kuhn) Hann and her husband Eric Hann, Jack Carmone, Nina (Kuhn) Popp and her husband Christopher Popp, and Nicola Carmone. He also leaves three great grandchildren: Alessia, Ariana and Michelangelo Carmone.

He was the son of the late Theodore and Isabelle (Vendituoli) Carmone of Warren, RI. He is survived by his loving sisters Eleanor (Carmone) Emond and Marilyn (Carmone) Bisbano. His brother Matthew and a sister Isabelle predeceased him. He further leaves countless nephews and nieces and cousins and friends.

Ted personified the American dream. Raised in an Italian family in Bristol, RI, he started his career as a construction carpenter at Wexler Construction Co., in Needham, MA. He soon moved up the ladder to superintendent. He attended night school at Northeastern University and Wentworth University to earn a degree in construction while living in Rhode Island. He transitioned to the estimating department at Wexler Construction Co. and rose to chief estimator. One of his great prides was being one of only a handful of estimators to ever earn a perfect score on his National Certified Professional Estimator Test. He was a charter member of Boston Chapter 25 Association of Professional Estimators.

Ted, with Jean’s help, would go on to start Carmone Construction Co. The company built over 200 private and public projects all over the state of Massachusetts. His greatest pride came from supervising the development of the Great Woods Center for the Performing Arts (now Xfinity Center). For many years, he hosted private events backstage before shows for Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffet, and the Beach Boys. Towards the end of his career, he slowed down a bit and joined the estimating staff for Spalding and Slye Construction, Macomber Construction, and Timberline Construction. Special projects included The Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Boston. “Work hard, play harder,” would be a reoccurring message to his family.

Ted was passionate about many things, but his family was his main priority. He attended hundreds of hockey, baseball, field hockey, lacrosse, softball, soccer, football games, and ski races cheering on his six grandchildren from t-ball to high school. He attended countless plays, dance, and piano recitals and was most proud to attend his grandchildren’s high school and college graduations.

Traveling with Jean and his family was one of his greatest passions. They traveled across the country, all over Europe and the islands. His ultimate trip was a two-week trip to Tuscany, Italy with family and friends. It was there that his love of limoncello was born. He perfected making it and developed his own recipe, “Tedncello,” that has been passed down through multiple generations in his family. Other memorable trips were cruises throughout Northern Europe, Alaska, and the Mediterranean. He took other unforgettable trips with family and friends to Mexico, France, Portugal, England, California, Gettysburg, Cooperstown, Camden Yards and just about every Caribbean Island. He also treasured taking multiple family trips to Disney World with his children and eventually grandkids. He was so proud to be able to do this but never forgot his roots and would say, “Not bad for two kids from Maple Ave.”

Ted had life-long friends that he cherished. One of his life highlights was the year his softball team, Mirage, won the Sharon Championship in the late 80s. He retired playing softball that year and he and his teammates began years of taking legendary golf trips all over the country. Ted loved golf and was a beloved member of Highland CC and frequent league member at Brookmeadow CC. He loved playing cribbage at the Head’s Summer Camp and poker nights with the boys. He was known by many as “The Commish” because he was the head of a long-running fantasy football league. Even in his final months, he won the overall championship this year culminating 45 years of playing with his family and friends. Ted was a fervent Boston Pro sports fan and attended Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics and Bruins championship games as well as attending The US Masters, US Open, and Ryder Cups.

His final love was his cars. Driving Jeannie to Crescent Ridge or Newport, RI in his 1956 convertible T-bird brought great joy. He also loved his 1955 Chevy, 1982 Datsun 280ZX Turbo and Altimas. For three decades, you could find Ted taking weekend trips with his family to his ski house at Loon Mountain, many of those in his beloved 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer.
