George H. Bowers,, 78, formerly of North Providence, died Monday in Maine with his family by his side. He was the loving husband of Eleanor C. (Smith) Bowers for 58 years. Born in Woonsocket he was a son of the late William V. and Helen V. (Barrett) Bowers.
Mr. Bowers was a graduate of LaSalle Academy and Bryant College. He served on the USS Mississippi during the Korean War. He was employed by Narragansett Electric for 40 years before retiring. George was a member of the Shamrock Society, Knights of Columbus, Cranston Council, where he served as Grand Knight. A life member of the American Legion, Post #40, Winthrop, where he also served as Commander for three terms. George was a member of Local #1399 of the 40 and 8 in Maine, as well as a member of the Elks Lodge in Augusta, Maine and a communicant of St. Frances Xavior of Winthrop. He was awarded the Spirit of America award, humanitarian of the year and volunteered many hours helping mentally challenged adults.
Besides his wife, George is survived by four daughters, Kathleen Page of Winthrop, ME, Maureen “Micki” Gallagher of Smithfield, Patricia Eddy of Lancaster, NH and Sue Nolin of Cranston, 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, two sisters Mary Rosera of Warwick, and Janet DiMauro of South Carolina. He was the brother of the late William J. Bowers.
George will be sadly missed by his family and his friends.
His funeral will be held Friday at 8am from the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Rt 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. Mass of Christian Burial at 9am in St. Michael’s Church, 80 Farnum Pike, Georgiaville. Burial will follow. Visitation Thursday 5-8pm. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, P.O.
