Gary Allen Nicholson
October 24, 1955 – March 1, 2026
Gary Allen Nicholson, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and mentor, passed away peacefully on March 1st, leaving behind a legacy of service and kindness.
Born on October 24, 1955, in Anderson, Indiana, to the late Robert and Dorothy (Nelis) Nicholson, Gary spent his life proving that one person’s dedication can ripple through an entire community.
A Life of Faith and Service
A proud alumnus of Anderson University, Gary’s faith was the compass of his life. He worked for the Missionary Board of the Church of God, and was an active member of Northview Church, where he combined his technical skills and his heart for worship as a valued member of the tech team.
Gary was perhaps best known for his 35-year commitment to Alcoholics Anonymous. As a leader and mentor, Gary walked alongside hundreds of individuals on their journey to recovery. His steady guidance, wisdom, and unwavering support saved lives and restored families, cementing his place as a pillar of the AA community.
A Heart for the Community
Gary never met a stranger he wouldn't help. He was a constant presence in the Anderson community, notably serving as a "friendship buddy" at Edgewater Woods nursing home, ensuring that no one felt forgotten. Whether it was volunteering his time or simply offering a listening ear over a hot cup of coffee, Gary’s mission was simple: to help everyone he came across.
Family and Legacy
Above all, Gary was a family man. He shared a beautiful life with his wife, Thonja (Keller) Nicholson, and took immense pride in his children and their spouses. His favorite role, however, was being "Grandpa." Whether he was cheering from the sidelines of a sports game or traveling for the family’s annual pilgrimage to the white sands of Siesta Key, Gary was happiest when surrounded by his grandkids.
He is survived by his wife, Thonja Nicholson; his children, Jennifer (Jordan) Slattery, Amy (Larry) Oliver, and Joshua (Kahri) Mason; his grandchildren, Bentley, Emerson, Maxwell, Samson, Zachariah, and Wilson Slattery; Cannon, Callie, and Casen Oliver; and Georgia Mason; his brother: Paul (Rita) Nicholson; along with multiple nieces, nephews, and a community of friends who became family.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Dorothy Nicholson.
