
Shirley E. Spencer, 91

Shirley E. (Woodward) Spencer, age 91, of Norton, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at the Daggett-Crandall-Newcomb Home in Norton. She was the beloved wife of the late Elwood W. “Bud” Spencer, to whom she was wed for over thirty years at the time of his death on March 26, 1990.
Born in Taunton, MA on October 10, 1934, she was a loving daughter of the late Clinton Woodward and Helen (Spencer) Lehouillier.
Shirley grew up in Taunton and was a 1952 graduate of Taunton High School. In addition to being a dedicated homemaker to her adoring family, Mrs. Spencer was employed as a rural carrier for the Raynham Post Office and a former school bus driver for both the towns of Raynham and Norton.
Shirley loved spending time amongst family and friends and was a member of the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed playing cards with “the girls”, golfing, worldwide traveling and all things pertaining to nature. Shirley’s other hobbies included reading, puzzles, Florida snow-birding and she will always be remembered for her love of animals, especially when it came to watching birds.
Shirley’s family would especially like to thank Caretenders, Compassionate Care Hospice and all the staff at the Daggett-Crandall- Newcomb Home in Norton for the kindness, care and love bestowed upon her.
She was the devoted mother of Bruce W. Spencer of Norton and his late wife Nadine Spencer, Marita L. Spencer-Metivier and her husband William E. Metivier, III of Blackstone, Darrell G. Spencer of Norton and the late Michael P. Spencer, the late Donald L. Spencer, who is survived by his cherished wife Mary-Jo Spencer Crowley of Taunton and the late Steven E. Spencer. She was the loving grandmother of Troy Spencer and his wife Amanda of Foxboro, Taylor Brodeur and her husband Adam of Foxboro, Ty Spencer and his wife Lynnea of Bellingham, Trace Spencer of Norton, Joseph Spencer of Taunton and the great grandmother of Noah, Lucas, Sophie and Darcy. She was the dear sister of Marilyn Hebert of Taunton and her late husband Edward Hebert, Carolyn “Jean” Lincoln of Lady Lake, Florida and her late husband Thomas Lincoln, the late Audrey Menard and her late husband Jug, the late Beverly Spencer and her late husband Ralph, the late Everett Woodward and his wife Bess and the late Earl Woodward and his late wife Susan. She was the much-loved daughter-in-law of the late Ernest “Win” and Gladys Benton and is also survived by her many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours on Saturday, March 7th from 2:00-5:00 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home, 19 Clapp Street (Off Route 140, Taunton Avenue) Norton. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, Shirley’s family has requested that donations in her memory be made to the Activities Account at the Daggett-Crandall-Newcomb Home, 55 Newland Street, Norton, MA 02766.
