
Dorothy B. McAveeney, a life-long Medford resident, passed away peacefully, Thursday, February 26, 2026, following a lengthy period of declining health. She was 89. Born in Medford, Dorothy was one of ten children of the late Ret. U.S. Army General John J. Carew and Jane (Malloy) Carew.
"Dottie" as she affectionately known to her family friends, was a 1954 graduate of St. Clement High School, where she excelled as a student athlete playing basketball and was a member of the cheerleading team.
Dottie worked for Tufts University for over thirty years as an Administrative Assistant in the University's Student Activities Department. Always social and pleasant, Dottie enjoyed people and interacting with them whether at work or at home. Dottie enjoyed keeping her mind and body healthy and over the years in her leisure time she liked to exercise, take walks, and was an avid reader and would frequently visit the Medford Public Library. She also enjoyed a nice glass of Pino Grigio and her favorite snack, popcorn.
Dottie will fondly be remembered for her kind and genuine demeanor and her unconditional love and devotion for her family and friends. She will be greatly missed.
Dottie is survived by her five children; John McAveeney, Jr. of Thornton, NH, Eddie McAveeney and his wife Lisa of Malden, Stephen McAveeney of Melrose, Brian McAveeney and June McAveeney, both of Delray Beach, FL. She is also survived by her loving granddaughter, Al McAveeney. She is further survived by her sisters, Kathleen Macri of Virginia and Sheila Lane of Brewster as well as many loving nieces and nephews. She is sadly predeceased by seven siblings.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours at the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, Thursday, March 5th, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 118 High St., Medford, at 11 a.m. Services will conclude with interment at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
