Obituary

CHICOPEE – Barbara A. (Williams) Betournay, 91, of the Aldenville section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, February 11, 2026. She passed into Eternal Life at the Harmony House in Chicopee surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving daughters and dedicated caregivers. She was born in Holyoke on Independence Day, July 4, 1934, a beloved daughter of the late Bertram and Rose (Martin) Williams. She was raised and educated in Holyoke and was a longtime resident of Aldenville. The last few years, she lived at The Arbors in Chicopee where she made many friends and wonderful memories. She worked for 34 years in the cafeteria at Saint Joan of Arc School in Chicopee, lovingly known as “the Peanut Butter Lady” and retired in 2001. She was a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Aldenville. Barbara enjoyed crafting and bowling with her husband. She took great pride and raising her five amazing daughters. Above all, she loved spending time with her family and her many friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, Henry J. Betournay who was Called Home on April 9, 2021. They were married on July 4, 1953 in the Saint Joan of Arc School Hall prior to the completion of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Aldenville and were blessed with over 67 years of happiness together. She leaves her five loving and devoted daughters, Dolores R. “Dee” Rainey and her husband, Timothy, of Wortham, TX, Dr. Jeanne M. Betournay-Gamelli, DNP and her husband, James Gamelli, of West Springfield, Ruth A. Wehr and her husband, Mark, of Chicopee, Lori S. Costella of Springfield and Cathy J. Thomas and her husband, Scott, of Hampden; her 10 cherished grandchildren, Angela Chelf and her fiancé, Randy Angeley, of Flower Mound, TX, Craig Rainey and his fiancée, Sarah Ellison, of Highland Village, TX, Dr. Allison Skop, Pharm. D and her husband, Greg Skop, of Westfield, Christopher Gamelli and his wife, Tiffany, of Southwick, Sarah Gamelli of Chicopee, Pamela Langlois and her husband, Doug, of Stafford Springs, CT, Zachary Wehr and his wife, Lindsey, of Jefferson, GA, Richy Costella of East Longmeadow, Robbie Costella, of Grafton, MA, and Ben Eckel of Hampden; her 14 cherished great-grandchildren, Drew Chelf, Logan Rainey, Haylie Gamelli, Jace Gamelli, August Skop, Darren Langlois, Lily Langlois, Natalie Langlois, Aubree Costella, Lennon Costella, Luca Costella, Nola Eckel, Hunter Eckel, and Brody Eckel; her dear sister, June Coburn, of Katy, TX; her dear sister-in-law, Estelle Tetrault of Granby; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended family members. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her dear sister, Wilma “Willie” Touchette and her husband, Ronald; her cherished grandson, Nicholas Eckel; and her dear son-in-law, Richard Costella.
