Obituary

Joseph A. Gamache, 86, of Dartmouth died Saturday September 9, 2006 at Brandon Woods of Dartmouth after a long illness. He was the husband of Virginia A. (Wilkinson) Gamache; they were married for 52 years.

Born in Assonet, the son of the late John and Adelaide (Allen) Gamache, he lived in Freetown for many years before moving to Dartmouth 15 years ago.

Mr. Gamache was formerly employed by Goodhue Lumber Company for 42 years until his retirement.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army with the 96th Signal Battalion in the India-Burma-China Theater. He was awarded the American Theater Campaign ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign ribbon, the Good Conduct medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Meritorious Service Unit citation.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Sandra Mello of Lakeville and Susan Gamache of Dartmouth; two grandchildren, Christopher Mello and Jessica Teixeira and her husband Kenny; and a great-grandson, Jacob Teixeira.

His family will receive visitors in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, Tuesday from 9-10 AM. A private family burial service will follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
