Obituary

CHICOPEE - Winchell Ping Chiu Woo, 87, of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, February 3, 2026. He passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Canton, China on October 14, 1938, the beloved son of the late Kwack Keung Woo and Shun Kam Wong. He was raised and educated in China and immigrated to Hong Kong before moving to Boston in 1960 and later Watertown in 1964. During his youth, he developed a love and passion for Kung Fu and sharing it with others. Through his love of Kung Fu, he developed his own Five Element Tai Chi which he shared with countless students. He also enjoyed playing basketball in China and Hong Kong as a semi-professional basketball player. He moved to Chicopee in 1980 where he lived the remainder of his life. Winchell was an entrepreneur and restaurateur and had owned and operated many restaurants in the Massachusetts area including Bamboo Huts in the Boston area and China Chef in Springfield area. During his leisure time, he loved spending time with his family and friends. He leaves his beloved wife, Virginia Sue King Woo; his three loving children, Vincent Woo and his wife, Karen of Palos Verdes, CA, Cynthia Yee and her husband, Thomas of Watertown and Celinda Woo and her partner, Patrick Eady of Longmeadow; his six cherished grandchildren, Brian Woo and his wife, Becca, Jon Woo and his wife, Sarah, Evan Yee and his companion, Leah, Vanessa Yee and her companion, Jonathan, Jasmine May Papoutsakis and her husband, Vugar Abdullayev, and Nikolas Papoutsakis and his companion, Bella; his cherished great grandson, Griffin James Woo; and his many dear extended family members, friends and Kung Fu students. His family will receive friends on Friday, February 13, 2026 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. followed by Reflections by his family and friends at 6 p.m. at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107.
