WEBSTER – John H. “Hooker” Warren, Jr., 70, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 29 at UMass-Memorial University Campus with his family lovingly by his side.
John leaves his devoted wife of 35 years, Patricia A. (Barry) Warren; his son, Jason P. Barry and his wife, Ashley L. Barry of Worcester; his daughter, Erin N. Warren of Grafton; his sisters, Fannie Townsend of Webster and Dorothy Jones of Auburn; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sisters, Ethel L. Robinson and Patricia E. Warren.
Born on July 6, 1955 in Tuskegee, Alabama, John was the son of John H. Warren, Sr. and Ethel L. (Lewis) Garrett. He was raised in Worcester, where he built many lifelong friendships and graduated from Saint Peter-Marian High School in 1975. For the past 24 years, he made his home in Webster, a place where he enjoyed a quieter pace of life and became a familiar, friendly face in the community.
John spent much of his life behind the wheel—first as a tour bus driver, then as a school bus driver, and later as a cab driver in Worcester. He retired in 2020. Whether he was driving students on their morning routes or helping someone get safely where they needed to go, he was known for his easygoing nature, warm smile, and ability to strike up a conversation with just about anyone.
A passionate sports fan, John never missed a chance to cheer on the Red Sox or the Patriots. Game days were sacred, often shared with family and filled with laughter, and occasional commentary. Those moments—simple, joyful, and full of personality—will be fondly remembered.
Above all else, John loved his family. He was a steady and reassuring presence, someone who showed his love in quiet, dependable ways: offering rides, calling to check in, sharing stories, or teasing just enough to make you laugh. He took pride in his children and cherished every milestone, big or small. His warmth, generosity, and gentle spirit will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 13 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Scanlon Funeral Service, 38 East Main Street. Words of remembrance will begin at 5:45 PM. Donations in John’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
