Obituary

September 17, 1942 – January 22, 2026

Barbara Bracci Jones, a woman of immense heart and quiet grace, entered eternal life on January 22, 2026. Born on September 17, 1942, in Rye, New Hampshire, she was the daughter of the late John “Bruno” Bracci and Yolanda “Viola” Orazi Bracci. Barbara took great pride in her Italian heritage and in being a “Noank fisherman’s daughter,” a connection that bound her deeply to the water throughout her life.

To many, she was simply “Nona.” It was a title she wore that extended far beyond her own grandchildren. Barbara lived by an unwavering code: her door—and her heart—were always open, and she possessed the rare gift of making every person feel seen, valued, and welcomed. Though she instinctively avoided the spotlight, she was a radiant, steady presence in the lives of many, loving simply, kindly, and without condition.

Barbara found her greatest peace by the shore. She was known for taking “toots” along the Mystic River, binoculars in hand, keeping a watchful eye on the osprey. She loved the ocean, the beach, and the feel of sand between her toes—always complemented by a fresh pedicure and her signature flip-flops. Whether she was enjoying a Klondike Bar, cheering loudly at a grandchild’s game, simmering a pot of sauce, or tending to the birdfeeders in her yard, Barbara found joy in life’s small, beautiful moments.

Her family was the center of her world and the inspiration for her "pay it forward" spirit. Barbara believed in leaving the world better than she found it, a conviction she proved through decades of stewardship. From managing the concession stand at Mystic Little League’s Rossie Field, leading Girl Scout troops, offering comfort as a Hospice volunteer, assisting at the polls, or donating to countless causes, her hands were always busy helping others. Her loyalty to those fighting uphill battles was symbolized by the Livestrong band she wore daily—a small but constant tribute to her resilient spirit.

Barbara is survived by her children: Cheryl Biekert, Michael Jones and his wife Charlene, and Matthew Jones and his wife Julia.

She was the cherished grandmother of Jessica, Matthew, Audrey, Gavin, Jeffrey, James, Valerie, Emily, and Sarah. She was also the proud great-grandmother of Savannah, Giovanni, Grace, Glory, Sienna, Vince, Kade, Alexiyah, Raniyah, Audrianna, and Ada’jade.

Barbara was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Saundra Howell; and her son-in-law, Anthony Biekert.

Barbara’s legacy lives on in every life she touched—in open doors, shared laughter, quiet shoreline moments, and love freely given.

Her family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday, February 7, from 1:00 to 3:00pm at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic. Words of Remembrance will immediately follow at 3:00 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Barbara's name to Always Home, an organization devoted to preventing homelessness.
