Catherine L. “Kay” Brown (Murphy), of Roslindale, passed away very peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on January 20, 2026. Beloved wife of the late Douglas W. Brown. Devoted mother of the late William P. Brown and his wife Mary, Sarah Brown, Patrick J. Brown and his wife Peggy, Maureen Brown and Christine A. LaRaia and her husband Michael LaRaia. Forever adored Grandma and biggest cheerleader to her cherished grandchildren MaryKate Brown, Megan Brown, Kyle Cullen, Shealagh Brown, Maddy LaRaia and Mikey LaRaia. Kay is survived by her sister Mary Rowan and her brother Patrick Murphy. Kay is also forever remembered close to the heart by many nieces and nephews, including the Rowan and Murphy families both here in Greater Boston and across the pond in Ireland.
Kay grew up on her family farm in Newtown, County Mayo. After her early schooling, she arrived in Boston in 1957. She and her sister Mary had a tremendous work ethic, working in many industries around Boston. After marrying in 1967, Kay's calling and her pride were raising her five children. Kay was also fun to be around. She loved Irish music, dancing, putting on a good roast, attending kids' (and grandkids) sports/arts events and enjoying the mighty craic at any family event. She was quick witted and had an infectious laugh - which truth be told - was quite a hearty cackle. She looked forward to a good jig and you’d have to hold tight for any Irish line dance where she had a partner to spin.
Her six grandchildren brought her immense joy. Kay Kay was fulfilled as a grandmother sitting on many sport sidelines and enjoying many theatre performances – and even the side o’ a mountain for a ski race. She looked forward to trips with the kids, including Maine, Florida, Ames Farm NH and Niagara Falls. She lived life simply, yet full and had great faith in her religion. She was a devoted parishioner of Sacred Heart. That faith carries us now as we celebrate her life and see her spirit continue in all of her grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, monetary contributions may be sent to Dana Farber or Good Shepherd Hospice.
