Obituary

Rebecca “Janie” Jane Edwards, 96, formerly of Dixonville, PA took flight into the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, January 13, 2026 from the AM PM Personal Care Home in De Lancey, PA.

The daughter of Harvey O. and Elda O. (Allison) Edwards, she was born on November 17, 1929 in Idamar, PA.

For most of her life, Janie was a member of the Dixonville Wesleyan Church. She loved spending time with her church family as she assisted with church functions, such as Vacation Bible School classes, volunteering at funeral dinners and being a member of the Ladies Missionary Committee.

Janie had also enjoyed participating in the activities of the former Dixonville Senior Citizens.

Her life revolved around her faith and her family. A gentle, quiet soul, Janie was a loving daughter, sister and aunt.

Janie loved children. Although Janie never had any children of her own, she was instrumental in helping to raise her nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Whether on the family farm or at the family home, Janie was known to be a hard worker.

Very meticulous and detail oriented, Janie enjoyed keeping a welcoming, neat and tidy home. Even at her room at the personal care home, she was very fastidious in keeping an orderly room.

One of Janie’s favorite pastimes was cooking with her sister, Margie. Janie’s specialty was mashed potatoes done by hand. No one could make smooth and creamy, lump-free mashed potatoes like Janie could.

All of her life, Janie loved being around animals and had a special fondness for dogs.

The last surviving member of her immediate family, Janie is survived by her niece and devoted caretaker, Rebecca “Becky” Peterson and husband Rob of Mahaffey, PA and their two children: son, Matthew Peterson and wife Jody and their children, Addison and Noah and son, Craig Peterson; niece, Carolyn Craft of FL; nephew, Ken Edwards of NC; niece, Glenda Peterson and husband, Larry of Clymer, PA and niece, Donna Sellers of Clymer, PA, as well as several great and great great nieces and nephews; step nieces and nephews and their families and her roommate of twelve years, Sue Weaver.

Janie was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers: W. Paul Edwards and Chalmers A. Edwards and her sister, Marjorie “Margie” L. Wheeler Pugh, with whom Janie shared a home for many, many years.

As is appropriate in recognition of what a special and important place the Dixonville Wesleyan Church and her church family have served in her life, all of Janie’s arrangements will take place at the church.

Family and friends will be received from 11:00 a.m. to the time of the 1:00 p.m. funeral service on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at the Dixonville Wesleyan Church at 246 Purchase Line Road in Dixonville, PA. Pastor Tom Pugh will officiate. Private interment will be at Oakland Cemetery in Indiana, PA near her parents and her sister, Margie.

Janie’s family extends their gratitude to the staff of the Punxsutawney Area Hospital and 365 Hospice. For the last thirteen years, Janie resided at AM PM Personal Care Home. Words cannot express the heartfelt appreciation of Janie’s family for the personal care home staff, who went above and beyond in their care, kindness and attentiveness shown towards Janie throughout her stay.

Arrangements are with the assistance of the Rairigh Funeral Home, Ltd. in Hillsdale, PA. Visit www.rairighfh.com to sign Janie’s guestbook and share memories or condolences.
