
SPRINGFIELD - Gloria Mary (Barrett) Fernandes, 87, a longtime resident of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Sunday, January 4, 2026. She passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born in Springfield on May 8, 1938 a beloved daughter of the late William R. and Josephine M. (Daly) Barrett. She was raised in Springfield, graduated from the former Sacred Heart Elementary and High School and was a lifelong resident of the city. She absolutely loved her "Boys in Blue" and was last employed as a Clerk for the Springfield Police Department. She previously was employed at the Hampden County Physicians on Maple Street in Springfield, and before that, was the Librarian at Sacred Heart Elementary School. She was a longtime communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Springfield where she ran the church bingo for many years. Gloria was an active member, Past President and Past Vice President of the John Boyle O'Reilly Club in East Springfield and was honored in 2013 with their Irish Person of the Year Award. She was also a longtime member of their Honor Guard and organized many bus trips to New York City and Saratoga. She was the proud recipient of the 2009 Burke Award from the Springfield Saint Patrick's Day Parade Committee. She was also a member of the Van Horn Parents Association. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family and many friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Fernandes who was Called Home on August 25, 1994; her son-in-law, Kevin O'Connor who was Called Home on April 16, 2024; and her sister-in-law, Carol Barrett who was Called Home on April 9, 2017. She leaves her four loving and devoted children, Margaret M. O'Connor of Springfield, Joseph M. Fernandes of Springfield, William R. Fernandes and his wife, Dawn, of Agawam, and Michael J. Fernandes of Springfield; her four cherished grandchildren, Brian P. O'Connor, Timothy K. O'Connor and his wife, Ally, Kelsey A. O'Connor, and Joseph M. Fernandes, Jr.; her four adored great grandchildren, Ava, Nora, Liam, and Cali Ann; her dear brother, Gilbert Barrett of Westfield; and her many dear nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends. Her family will receive friends on Monday, January 19, 2026 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. followed by a Prayer Service at 12 p.m. at the St. Pierre - Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107.
