Obituary

Kevin P. Mawn, Ret. Winchester Police Dept., age 82, of Wilmington, formerly a lifelong resident of Winchester, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2025, lovingly surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband for 52 years of Patricia M. “Patti” (Capone) Mawn.

Born, raised and educated in Winchester, Kevin was the son of James F. and Anna M. (Oliver) Mawn. He attended St. Mary’s School in Winchester kindergarten through 8th grade and was a graduate of Winchester High School with the class of 1961. He served in the Army National Guard and attended Springfield College where he earned a bachelor’s degree in human resources.

Upon his return to Winchester, Kevin worked at O’Connell’s Shell Station and then joined the Winchester Police Force, where he worked for over 35 years until his retirement in 2003. During that time, he was the Police Safety Officer for over 20 years and forged many lifelong relationships within the Winchester community.

In 2003, Kevin was awarded the Winchester Chamber of Commerce’s annual “Citizen of the Year” award, a prestigious recognition for his many contributions to the betterment of life in Winchester. Additionally, many remember Kevin’s signature role as Santa Claus at the Winchester Cooperative Bank where he enjoyed posing for holiday photos and giving out treats for over 30 years. An avid Boston sports fan, he was a season ticket holder for the Bruins and the Patriots (since 1960) and could always be found tuning in to the Red Sox and Celtics as well. Locally, he always kept tabs on the Winchester sports teams in the town he loved.

Kevin will be remembered for his steadfast dedication to his family and large extended family, his friends and the town of Winchester. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and cheering them on in their own activities and endeavors.

In addition to his devoted wife, Patti, Kevin is also survived by his son, Paul J. “P.J.” Mawn and his wife, Melissa, of Wilmington, and his cherished grandchildren Brooke, Max and Jack. He was the 8th of 11 siblings: Patricia Brazee of Chelmsford, John E. Mawn of Hollis, NH, Marilyn Jeffrey of Acton, Peter M. Mawn of North Reading and the late James F. Mawn, Jr., Judith Murphy, Richard A. Mawn, Thomas L. Mawn, Mary Louise Mawn, and Joseph B. Mawn. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and his lifelong friend Bill Shields.
