Obituary


It is with profound sadness that we share the loss of the beloved husband and father, William "Bill" Newell, a longtime resident of Medford.

Bill and his loving wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Newell, were high school sweethearts who shared 66 years of marriage. Together, they built a life full of love, family, and adventure, creating countless treasured memories along the way.

He was born to Lewis M. and Rita (McCabe) Newell, the second of four children. He is survived by his sister Rita "Petie" (Newell) Donovan. He was predeceased by his siblings, Elizabeth (Newell) Kelly and Lewis Newell.

Bill is survived by his five loving children: Bill Newell and his partner, Paula Kernen, of Plymouth; Lucinda and her husband, Lawrence Maganzini, of Stoneham; Richard Newell and his partner Pamela Leverone, of Plaistow, New Hampshire; Denise and her husband, Mustafa Haidermota, of Temecula, California; and Elizabeth and her husband, Scott Lopes, of Sandwich.

Known as “Bubba” to his beloved grandchildren Jonathan, William, Christian, Mathew, Ryan, Samantha, Michelle, Andrew, Daniel, Alexandra, Adam, Bridget, Quaid, Emily, Zakir and great-grandchildren William Jr., Evelyn, Brooke, Jameson, Rylee, Joseph III, and Isabella.

He is also survived by many loving in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

A graduate of Somerville High School, Bill proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard before dedicating 20 years to the United States Navy Submarines Reserves as an E6 Sonar Technician. Along with his military service, he worked as Chief Systems Operator for Commonwealth Electric.

Bill had a deep love for his family and treasured time spent together. Known for his quick wit and sense of humor, he brought laughter to every gathering. He found his greatest joy on the ocean, especially aboard his sailboat, and was proud of his longtime involvement with the Boat Clubs in Medford and Charleston. Bill was also a longtime member of the Winchester Elks. He had a special love for dogs and appreciated life’s simple pleasures.

Bill's funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Raphael Church, 514 High Street, Medford on Tuesday, December 30, 2025 at 11 AM. Relatives and friends are most welcome to attend. Visiting hours will be held in the Beals-Geake-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 29 Governors Avenue, Medford on Monday, December 29, 2025 from 4 to 7 PM. Interment will be privately held.
