Beulah “Boots” Eileen VanOstran Eflin was born in Lafayette, IN on May 23,1932. She was a 1950 graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School. She graduated from DePauw University School of Music in 1954. She obtained a master’s degree from Ball State University and taught elementary school for decades. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi education Honorary.

Boots was first a music teacher at College Corner and at Jackson Township Schools near Gas City from 1954-1959 and enjoyed it thoroughly!

In 1972 she began teaching at Greenbrier Elementary School until retiring in 1993. One day at Mounds Mall, a few years after retiring, a former student told her that they had planned to become a third-grade teacher just like Mrs. Eflin. This pleased her greatly!

Boots was a violin major playing with the DePauw University Symphony. She sang with the University Choir and made many trips with them. One trip was to New York City where the choir sang on the Kate Smith television program. She was a true music lover.

Boots and Jack were members of the First Presbyterian Church. She sang continuously in the church choir. Beginning in 1966 she was a soloist and sang in a quartet from 1966-1975 and then in the Harmony Connection, a women’s barbershop group for 10 years. She served as an Elder, on the Board of Deacons, was a member of the Worship and Music Committee, and the Christian Education Committee.

Boots was a member of the Art Club, Twentieth Century Club, chapter DW of P.E.O., Anderson Country Club and Edgewood Country Club. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, Psi Iota Xi Sorority, and the Isabel Society. She was a Girl scout leader and served on the Young Life Committee.

Traveling with her husband and friends was a boundless joy. Her favorite trips were to Israel and Oberammergau, Germany for the Passion Play. She enjoyed winter trips to Florida with Jack, the girls, and friends. Other overseas trips were to Spain, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Paris, Rome, Greece, the Greek Isles, and Turkey. They also cruised to Alaska and various Caribbean ports and traveled extensively throughout the United States.

Babysitting with her grandchildren was a special delight! Her church family was incredibly special to her. She was a wonderful wife, daughter, mother, and grandmother and a very caring teacher. Her pretty smile, warm personality and caring manner will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Preceding her in death was the love of her life, Pascal “Jack” Eflin, her husband of over 68 years. Beulah’s parents, Ralph T. and Hazel Van Ostran and her two brothers, Robert I. and Ralph E. Van Ostran all of Lafayette, Indiana.
