Obituary

Richard Edward Welch, 83 of Watertown, Massachusetts, died peacefully at home, surrounded by his loved ones on Monday, December 15th, 2025.

Born in South Boston, Massachusetts, on September 12th, 1942, he was one of seven brothers and sisters, the son of Daniel “Joe” Welch and Elizabeth “Sis” Welch (Rouse).

Richard has joined his late beloved wife, Frances Welch (McCannell). Rich and Fran were married on September 21st, 1963. Together they had three wonderful daughters, to whom Rich devoted his life to supporting, working as a printer by trade. When his wife sadly passed away, Richard devoted much of his time to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6536. Rich enjoyed spending his days playing cards, enjoying the company of his children and grandchildren, and gardening.

Rich was a devoted father and adored grandfather who is survived by many extended relatives and close friends. He will be remembered by his daughter Helen Clinton (Welch) and her husband, John Clinton; his daughter Grace Sampson (Welch) and her husband David Sampson; and his daughter Kristine Mahan (Welch), and her husband Edward Mahan. He leaves behind four grandchildren: John Clinton, Jr., Caroline Clinton, Katherine “Katie” Sampson, and Lilah Mahan. Richard was blessed to meet two great grandchildren, Ronan Clinton and Mary Clinton. Predeceased by siblings Daniel Welch, Carol Lynch (Welch), Helen Pollard (Welch), and Donald “Donny” Welch, Richard departs from sisters Elaine “Tee” Cowing and Barbara “Barbie” Welch.

Visitation will be held at Casper Funeral Home, 187 Dorchester St, South Boston, on Monday, December 22nd from five to eight p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 23rd at ten a.m. at Gate of Heaven Church, 615 East 4th St, South Boston. Burial will follow at Blue Hills Cemetery, Braintree.
