Obituary

NORTH ANDOVER - George H. Burkinshaw Jr., 85, husband of the late Myrtle (Mills) Burkinshaw, of North Andover, formerly of Peabody and Salem, died Monday September 4, 2006 at his residence following a long illness.

Born and raised in Salem, he was the son of the late George H. Sr. and Alice (Tracey) Burkinshaw, and was a graduate of St. John’s Preparatory School, Danvers. He was a resident of Peabody for most of his life until moving to North Andover 20 years ago.

An Army Veteran of WWII, he served in the Pacific with the 334th Quartermaster Truck Co., 42nd QM Battalion Mobile and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Following WWII, Mr. Burkinshaw was employed in the purchasing department at the Charlestown Naval Ship Yard for 20 years. During that time, he also assisted his father with the operation of the family business, Ye Olde Pepper Companie in Salem. He assumed ownership of the business, and ran it until retiring in the mid 1990's. His son Robert now runs the business.

Mr. Burkinshaw was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Leo Council, Peabody, and later transferred to the Msgr Francis L. Shea Council in N. Andover. He was a member of the New England Confectioners and Retail Confectioners, International. He was a former parishioner of the St. Thomas the Apostle Church Peabody, and was a parishioner of St. Michael’s Church in North Andover. He was a member of the North Andover Senior Citizens.

He is survived by one son & daughter-in-law, Robert W. & Christine Burkinshaw of N. Andover, 4 grandchildren, Craig & his wife Jennifer Burkinshaw of Salem, Jaclyn Burkinshaw of Middleton, Tracey Cirigliano and Amy Cirigliano, both of Lawrence, one great grandchild, Meagan Burkinshaw of Salem and several nieces and nephews.

His funeral service will be held Friday, September 8, 2006 at 9:45 am from the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem, followed by a funeral Mass at 11 am at St. Thomas The Apostle Church, Route 114 on the Peabody-Salem line. Visiting hours are Thursday, 4 to 8 pm. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Burial is in St. Mary Cemetery, Salem. in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to either the Discalced Carmelite Monastery, 15 Mount Carmel Rd., Danvers, MA 01923 or to the Merrimack Valley Hospice, Inc., 360 Merrimack St., Bldg 9, Lawrence, MA 01843.
