Obituary

Georgios “George” Savvidis, 92, of Worcester died Saturday, December 13th in UMASS Memorial Hospital – Memorial Campus. His wife of 59 years, Dimitra (Vogiatzis) Savvidis died in 2018. He leaves a son, Vasilios “Bill” Savvidis and his wife, Flora (Papalilo) of Holden; a daughter, Kathy Alexiadis and her husband, Phil of Holden; a brother, Haralambos of Greece; a sister, Soultana of Germany; five grandsons, John Alexiadis and his fiancé, Christine, George Savvidis, George Alexiadis and his wife, Krisanthi, Dimitri Savvidis and his companion, Carla, and Phillip Alexiadis; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Panagiotis and Savvas, and a sister, Vespina.
He was born in Hrisohorafa, Greece the son of Ioannis and Vasiliki (Georgiadou) Savvidis. George immigrated to the United States in 1970 with his beloved wife and children, arriving with humble beginnings and a steadfast determination to build a better life for his family. Through hard work, perseverance, and sacrifice, he truly realized the American Dream.
George began his working years with the Worcester Bus Company, where he was employed for ten years. He then went on to run Holden Pizza alongside his wife and family, a business that became both a livelihood and a legacy. For three decades, George poured his heart into the restaurant until his retirement, when he proudly passed the business on to his son, Bill.
A devoted member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral and the Cultural Center Hrisohorafition Alexander the Great, George remained deeply connected to his faith and heritage. In retirement, he and his wife cherished traveling to Greece each summer, returning to his beloved village of Hrisohorafa—a place that always held his heart.
When home, George treasured time spent with family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grandfather who valued family above all else. Though he came from modest means, George was driven by a desire to provide his children with opportunities he did not have growing up. His greatest joy was raising his children, seeing them marry, and be blessed with families of their own, including five beloved grandsons.
George lived a life defined by dedication, love, and gratitude. He was truly blessed by opportunity and leaves behind a legacy of hard work, faith, and family devotion that will continue for generations.
Calling hours are Tuesday, December 16th from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street followed by his funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street, Worcester, MA 01609 or to Cultural Center Hrisohorafiton Alexander the Great, 880 Main Street, Worcester, MA 01610.
