LACONIA ---- Hazel C. Hanefeld, 98, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family on Friday, December 5, 2025. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 75 years, Donald Hanefeld, who passed on February 18, 2024.
Born on June 30, 1927, in Nashua, NH, Hazel was the daughter of Percy and Larou (Parker) Campbell. The eldest of four children, she was predeceased by her sisters Beverly C. Tobin, Joy L. Kimball and Jeanne C. Kszywanos.
Hazel met the love of her life, Donald, at a dance in Boston following the decommissioning of his Navy ship. The two married on July 4, 1948, and together built a rich and joyful life, highlighted by a memorable cross-country adventure on their motorcycle—a story cherished by generations of family.
At a time when few women pursued higher education, Hazel began her studies at the University of New Hampshire and later completed her degree at Erie Community College in Buffalo, NY at the age of 55. She worked in various roles before devoting herself to raising her family. An avid and accomplished golfer, Hazel was a longtime member of Rochester Country Club in Rochester, NH, where she proudly claimed six Women’s Club Championships (1964, 1965, 1968, 1969, 1973, and 1974). Above all of her accomplishments, Hazel treasured time spent with her family most dearly.
Hazel is survived by her devoted daughter, Kim (Hanefeld) Dutile, and her husband Paul of Laconia, NH; her dedicated son, Kirk Hanefeld, and his wife Kathleen (Hurley) of Port St. Lucie, FL; her grandchildren Joshua and his wife Natalie of Fayetteville, AR, Shaun and his wife Marci of Laconia, NH, Nathan and his wife Kerri of Meredith, NH, Scott and his wife Amy of Little Rock, AR, and Ryan Hanefeld of San Francisco, CA; her 13 precious great-grandchildren; and her thoughtful and caring nephew, Ron Jacques of Laconia, NH. She was predeceased by her dear niece, Karen Jacques.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Lakes Region VNA Hospice team for their compassionate in-home care during Hazel’s final days.
Hazel and Donald will be laid to rest together in the spring of 2026 at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH.
Donations in Hazel’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org.
