Preston – Jacob Russell "Jake" Herman Sr. born, Feb. 7, 1960, passed away Dec. 3, 2025, surrounded by loved ones, following complications from an injury. Jacob was born in Torrance, Calif.
Starting his career, he worked as a skilled laborer, beginning his career at Hughes Helicopter, where he met his wife of 40 years, Elaine Adelia Hickey Herman, who passed away two years ago. After leaving California, he moved to Preston, where he worked in the steel industry as a CAD/CAM operator on large infrastructure projects, most notably the Tomlinson Lift Bridge in New Haven. Jake’s final job was as a shipfitter at Electric Boat, a General Dynamics company where he retired in 2025. He worked long hours, tirelessly providing for his loved ones.
Jake will be remembered for his kind and generous spirit, often providing mechanical services free of charge for family, friends and even strangers. He was a devoted family man and motorcycle enthusiast who brought laughter to everyone around him. Jake also had a great love for music, reflected in his work as a part-time DJ for his business, “24-Karat Sound.” It was a job he was passionate about, and his extensive musical knowledge often carried over into conversations with friends and family.
Jake was 65 years old and survived by his four adult children: Jacob Herman, Nicholas Herman, Dillon Herman, and Kaitlin (Herman) Hazel; and eight grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Daniel Herman, Thomas Herman, Kathy (Herman) Cain and Terrance Herman.
A memorial service celebrating Jacob’s life will take place Saturday, Dec. 13, at Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic. Viewing hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. with a service immediately after.
