HAUGHEY, PHILIP CARBERRY
Philip C. “Phil” Haughey, of Waban, MA and York Harbor, ME passed away at his home on December 1, 2025.
Born on March 25, 1935 in Waltham, MA, Phil was the youngest of eight children and spent his early years living on 7th Street in South Boston before the family moved to Framingham, MA. Phil showed athletic promise at an early age and was offered a full scholarship at the Trinity Pawling School in Pawling, NY. Trinity Pawling, or TP as is commonly known, was a place that changed the trajectory of his life. He absolutely loved the school in every respect, was a student leader, a Hall of Fame Tri Varsity Athlete and remained devoted to the school for the entirety of his life.
From TP, Phil joined the Harvard College Class of 1957. At Harvard, Phil developed lifelong friendships with teammates and classmates alike. He was one of the last three sport athletes (in football, basketball and baseball), and was active in many clubs and organizations. It was during his time at Harvard that perhaps the most important thing in his life occurred: he met Peggy McCarthy, the woman who would become his wife of 67 years.
Phil and Peggy settled in Waban, MA over 60 years ago, where they raised their four children. They were active members in the Waban community, could be seen almost every day in the summer at Longwood Cricket Club and everyone wanted a dance with “Mr. Haughey” at the father-daughter dinner dances at NCDS. Phil’s quick wit and sense of humor were always present and if he had a quarter in his pocket, no doubt he’d show you the “magic quarter trick”. There was always music playing in their house, whether Frank or Ella, you can be sure the stereo was on and turned up to a decent volume. Shiny cars and shiny shoes were of utmost importance to Phil and his sense of style was unparalleled. At 6’6”, he was hard to miss. Phil and Peggy were blessed to have traveled our country and the world, spending much of that time in their beloved Ireland.
Phil’s family and faith were at the top of the list for him. His devotion to both was evident in his everyday life.
Second to that, he loved his friends, his schools and his Irish heritage.
Phil’s professional career began in the real estate division of the Star Market Company. He moved on to join his brother-in-law Gerald McCarthy before forming his own company, The Haughey Company, in Boston. The Haughey Company was established in the early 1970s and continues to this day with his sons, Christopher and Phil, Jr., at the helm.
Outside of real estate, Phil served many roles and was involved in countless organizations throughout Harvard University. Phil was actively involved in the Harvard Catholic Center both as a student and alumni, was Chairman of The Friends of Harvard Football, Baseball and Basketball and served as Chairman of Harvard’s Visiting Committee on Athletics. He Chaired the Department of Celtic Languages and Literatures, served as Chairman to The Nomination Overseers and Directors of Harvard University, was President and Chairman of the Harvard Varsity Club as well as the President of The Harvard Club of Boston from 2007-2010.
Harvard wasn’t his only interest. Phil was a long-time member of the Board of the Bay State Games, a non-profit close to his heart. He was an active member of the Boston College Irish Studies program and in the mid-1980’s, Phil was part owner/investor in Boston’s CBS affiliate, WNEV-TV and was their Editorial Chairman. He was actively involved in Boston Catholic Television, Catholic Charities and The Catholic Schools Foundation.
Phil was a third generation Irish-American and was very proud of his Irish heritage. He and Peggy were frequent visitors to Ireland, visiting family and friends and traveling throughout the country. Phil held an interest in the Benner’s Hotel in Dingle, Ireland and in 2005, was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Ulster. Phil was a member of the North American Board of the Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business, U.C.D as well as the Eire Society of Boston, served as Chairman of the Friends of the Boston Irish Famine Memorial and enjoyed his involvement with the Irish American Partnership.
To Phil and Peggy, the rocky coast of Maine was the closest thing to Ireland, and that is where they found their dream home. They spent countless weekends up and down the coast furnishing their home and filling it with books, art, antiques and love. They quickly became immersed in the York Harbor community as parishioners of St. Christopher’s, members of the York Harbor Reading Room and the York Golf and Tennis Club, and were long-time supporters of York Land Trust and the York Historical Society.
Many thanks to the angels on earth who were our parents' incredible caregivers, most especially Fatu Sesay, their longest-standing caregiver, Phyllis Cavaleri, Andrea Krautz and Brandon Dvorsky. Their kind, loving and compassionate attention to our parents was truly something to behold. To the Hospice Nurses at Good Shepherd Community Care: Lily Beagan, Lisa Barsanti, Vicki Hotvedt and Diana Sawyer, you did double duty helping our parents find their ways, and we cannot thank you enough.
Phil was predeceased by his beloved wife Peggy on May 16, 2025. He is survived by his four children, Christopher M. (Ellenann) Haughey of Wellesley, MA, Philip C. (Nicole) Haughey, Jr. of Wellesley, MA, Elizabeth H. (Arthur) Greenwood of Wellesley, MA and Andrea H. (Tyler) Bristol of Eliot, ME.
Phil is also survived by his loving grandchildren: Caroline (Haughey) Dubord, Christin (Haughey) Satterthwaite, Conor Haughey; Cleo, Charles, Owen and Emmett Greenwood; Liam, Margaret and Declan Bristol; and great-grandchildren Eloise, Blair, Harry and Darcy.
In addition, Phil is survived by his big brother, Robert M. Haughey.
