Obituary

LYMAN- With love and gratitude for his presence in our lives, the family of Michael Charles Mahar, 75, said goodbye to their beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, who passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at his home in Lyman after a courageous battle with ALS.

Mike was born on June 29, 1950, in Rumford, Maine to Nelson and Medora Mahar and was a 1968 graduate of Stephens High School. He served his country faithfully as a sergeant in the United States Air Force from 1968 to 1972.

Mike was employed as a Field Service Engineer by Eastman Kodak in the copier products and medical imaging divisions until his retirement in 2015. He was happiest when spending time with family and friends, visiting “camp” on Concord Pond in Woodstock, Maine, and traveling throughout Maine and Canada -- particularly if fly fishing was involved.

Mike is lovingly remembered by many, including his adoring wife, Jan; son Shawn and his wife Bethany of Kingfield, Maine; daughter Sarah (Yerxa) and her husband Chris of York, Maine; brother Steve and his wife Linzee of Portsmouth, NH; sister Kathy of Lowell, MA; granddaughters Addison and Ayla; grandson Sullivan; his wonderful stepfamily; and many amazing cousins. Mike was predeceased by his beloved first wife, Gail in 2017, and by his parents.

Mike brought humor, love, and genuine warmth to every space he entered and he will be forever missed. The family would like to thank the team members at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston, the ALS Clinic at Mass General in Boston, and Hospice of Southern Maine for the amazing and unwavering support.

A celebration of Mike’s life will be held on January 17, 2026, from 1pm-3pm at the McKernan Inn, 122 McKernan Drive, South Portland, ME. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made in Mike’s name to Compassionate Care ALS POX 1052 West Falmouth, MA 02574 .
