
Richard A. Mekal, age 73, passed away on November 19, 2025. A longstanding resident of Chicopee, he was born on February 25, 1952, son of the late Julius J. Mekal and Antoinette A. (Skowronek) Mekal. Richard was a longtime employee of Big Y before moving into an educational role in the Springfield Public Schools where he retired to enjoy time with his beloved family, especially his grandchildren. Richard loved to share how proud he was of them with any individual he spoke to. He was an incredibly charismatic person that everyone enjoyed being around. He always had a story to tell, even if they were long, and multiple jokes on hand to bring a smile to your face. He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 48 years, Bettyann (Phaneuf) Mekal who passed away in 2022 and two brothers, John and Robert “Bobby” Mekal. He is survived by two sons, Zachary Mekal and his wife Kristyn of Cumming, GA and Ben Mekal and his wife Elissa of Milton, MA; two brothers, Thomas Mekal and his wife Betsy of Chicopee and Steven Mekal and his wife Donna of Chicopee; his twin sister, Joan Morneau and her husband Al of Holyoke; three grandchildren, Camryn, Jacoby and Conor along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly. Calling hours will be held on Friday, November 28, 2025 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM and on the morning of the funeral, Saturday, November 29, 2025 from 8:30 – 9:30 AM at the Grise Funeral Home, 280 Springfield St, Chicopee.
