Obituary

Kathleen M. "Kitty" (Farren) Whelan, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, November 12, 2025 at the Aberjona Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Winchester. She was 87 years of age.

Kitty was born in Boston on September 12, 1938, a daughter of the late Daniel P. Farren and Rose (Devlin) Farren. She grew up in Charlestown where she attended St. Francis De Sales Parochial School and the Boston Public School system, graduating from Charlestown High School in 1956. Kitty worked as a Probation Clerk at the Boston Municipal Court in Charlestown for 36 years, and previously worked at M.J. Leahy Electrical Supply House and Peerless Electric as a bookkeeper. She was unapologetically proud of her Irish Heritage. She enjoyed summering at her home in Pocasset, was a chocolate connoisseur and an amateur landscape architect.

Kitty is the loving wife of the late Eugene F. “Buddy” Whelan. She is the devoted mother of Jacqueline Chaisson and her husband Stephen, and the late David Whelan and his surviving wife Maryhelen. She is the beloved Nan of Bridgette Ridlon and her husband Eric, Jeanmarie Davis and her husband Alexander, Michael Chaisson and his companion Emily Conner, and Great-Kitty to Jack Ridlon. She is the adored sister of Grace Campbell and her late husband Dan, and the late Daniel Farren and his surviving wife Mary, Anna Doris and her surviving husband retired Boston Police Detective Bud, Alice Mortali and her husband Fred, Eileen Sullivan and her surviving husband Jimmy, James Farren, and Bernard Farren. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Kitty's visiting hours on Monday morning, November 17, 2025, from 9:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. in The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by her Funeral Mass in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown at 12 Noon. Her burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden.
