Obituary


CUMBERLAND, Maine – Leonard (Len) A. Taylor, Jr., 90 passed away peacefully at Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough, on November 4, 2025, five years after being diagnosed with bladder cancer.
Born at home in Pawtucket, RI on December 1, 1934, to Isabel (Wooley) and Leonard A. Taylor, Sr. Len served in the U.S. Naval Reserves while a student at the vocational high school. Upon graduation he completed his basic training and served on a mine sweeper during the Korean Conflict.
Following his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1957, Len married Margaret Jean Stevens of Wolfeboro, NH. Len and Margaret Jean had met each other when he was nine and she was seven at the summer resort on Lake Wentworth that her family owned and where his family were summer guests. They have been married for 68 years.
Len began his insurance career at Guy Carpenter Insurance Company in New York, NY. He then made the move to The New Hampshire Insurance Company in Manchester, NH before moving to Maine to open a branch in Portland as a bonding and commercial underwriter. Len would go on to work for The Great American Insurance Company as a production underwriter and sales representative before taking a commercial underwriting position with Morse, Payson and Noyes.
While living in New Hampshire Len joined the Bektash Shrine Temple. When he and Margaret Jean moved to Maine he became a member of the Kora Temple. He was a 32nd degree Mason. Len was also a member of the Woodfords Club, longtime member of Portland Country Club and Val Halla Golf Club. He particularly enjoyed his time golfing with the “Geezers” golf group at Val Halla.
When Len and Margaret Jean moved to Maine they became members of the Episcopal Church of Saint Mary the Virgin in Falmouth. He served as a Lay Reader and Eucharistic Minister for nearly sixty years. Len also served the church as a member of the Vestry several times and on many committees.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Jean of 68 years, his stepbrother Bruce Lancaster and his wife Alexandra of Falmouth, MA, his daughter Heather and her husband Richard Evensen of Grenoble, FR, his son Lad Taylor and his wife Edie Taylor of Cumberland, ME, grandchildren Corey Purcell, Halley Taylor and Andrew Taylor, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Special thanks for the compassionate loving care provided by Dr. Mark Wrona’s team, Dr. Christian Thomas’ team, Dr. Benjamin Scoll, Dr. Miguel Velazquez, Michael Bouton, RN, Hospice of Southern Maine and the staff at Gosnell Hospice House.
Visiting hours will be on Friday, November 14, 2025 from 3:00-5:00 in the Father James Chapel and funeral the following day, Saturday November 15, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., both at the Episcopal Church of Saint Mary the Virgin, 43 Foreside Road in Falmouth, Maine.
