George H. Young Jr., 76, of North Providence, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 54 years, Bernice (Harrison) Young.
He is survived by his two sons, George “Skip” Young of Greenville, and Gregory Young and his wife, Kirsten Hokeness. He was the proud grandfather of Maddie Young, Caiden Young, Grace Young and Sophia Young. He is also survived by his brother, David Young, and his wife, Kathy; and his nephew, Christopher Young. His grandchildren were the apple of his eye and what kept him going during the most trying times.
He was also a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews, both directly and “adopted,” through the many friendships he formed over the years.
George was a proud American and served in the U.S. Navy. A Vietnam veteran, he was deeply honored to have served and protected his country. Before being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, George enjoyed bringing joy to others by playing Santa Claus for friends, family, and the community—always taking great care to make each visit magical. He was also deeply involved in youth sports, coaching and supporting every team his sons joined.
A longtime member of The Way Ministries in North Providence, George worked tirelessly to keep the church open and thriving. His dedication was one of the main reasons the church stands strong today.
George will be remembered for his quick wit, his endless curiosity, and his love of “useless information.” He was known for his unique sense of humor, his passion for television (and flipping through every available channel), and his unforgettable Secret Santa gifts—always full of surprises. He was an avid fan of the Patriots and Red Sox, and a proud former student-athlete at Saint Andrew’s School where he was voted Most Athletic.
Above all, George was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, coach, veteran, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
His funeral will be held Monday, November 3, 2025, at 11 am at Greystone Church, North Providence. Visitation will take place that morning from 8:30 to 10:30am at the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Rt 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville.
