MYSTIC: Arthur C. Sheffield Jr, 93, of Mystic died Thursday, October 23, 2025 at Yale New Haven Hospital. He is survived by his beloved wife, Floretta (Massey) Sheffield.
He was born on January 30, 1932 in Newport, RI, the son of Arthur and Thelma Sheffield.
He grew up in Newport and lived around the corner from his wife's family but they didn't meet until they were teens. He and Floretta were married on December 31, 1954 at Shiloh Baptist Church in Newport.
Arthur proudly served for 28 years in the US Army completing 3 tours of Korea and 2 tours of Vietnam and was honorably discharged as 1st Sergeant E-8. He continued his career as an armed guard at Millstone for 20 years. He was a faithful member of the Chapel on the Thames and a member of the American Legion and VFW.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Joyce McCants and Rita Taylor and her husband Lavell, grandchildren Aaron and Adrian Sheffield, Ja'Toya and Tre'Vaughn Taylor, Anthony McCants Jr., Dewon, Iesha and Shane Wheeler, and Jermaine and Tiffany Carter and 14 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Charles Sheffield, Elizabeth Harris, Charlotte Murphy, Ralph Sheffield and Frederick Sheffield. and a host of nieces and nephews, in=laws and friends. He is predeceased by his daughter Christine Wheeler, grandson Amann Sheffield, 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
His family will greet relatives and friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will immediately follow in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic.
