Mrs. Carol A. Marcello, A resident of Portland and beloved wife of the late Edward J. Marcello, passed away peacefully at the Seaside Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Portland on Thursday morning, October 23, 2025. She was 80 years old.
Carol retired from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, where she proudly worked with the Department of Public Health on claims for hospital and nursing home patients. But her greatest work in life was raising her six children with her husband of 54 years.
No matter what challenges came her way, Carol was famous for making the best of every situation. She cherished her years living in Boston’s North End with Ed, their trips to Saratoga Race Track, and cheering for the Red Sox and Patriots. She loved horse racing, a good western, the show Heartland, cooking shows, reading, her visits with family, with her beloved cat, Max, nearby.
In a family full of big personalities, Carol was the one who kept the train on the tracks. She was one of the kindest, most loving, and sweetest souls you could ever meet. She was, simply put, a saint.
She is survived by her loving children: Michael and Laurie of Portland, Maine; Jennifer and Andy Cook of Moosup, Connecticut; Gina and Keith Johnson of York, Maine; and Anthony Marcello of Boston, Massachusetts. She also leaves her brother, Carl Hagerstrom of Florida; nineteen grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Carol was predeceased by her sons, William Marcello and Matthew Marcello.
Carol’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress Street, Portland, on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at 10 a.m. Interment will be private. Immediately following the mass, all are welcome to join Carol's family at Bruno's Restaurant & Tavern, 33 Allen Avenue, Portland, ME 04103.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carol’s memory to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, P.O. Box 803, Elmhurst, IL 60126.
