Obituary

Michael J. O’Brien, 72, of Whitman, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 14th at South Shore Hospital after a brief illness. Born on April 2, 1953, Michael was the youngest son of the late Bernard F. O’Brien, Sr. and Phyllis W. (Harding) O’Brien.

Michael lived his entire life in Whitman and was a graduate of Whitman-Hanson Regional High School. He went on to work in the Small Parts Department at Litecontrol Corporation in Hanson and Plympton, where he retired after 38 years.

Michael was a quiet man who lived a simple life. He enjoyed watching sports and was an avid Red Sox and Bruins fan. Following his retirement, he enjoyed his daily drives around town; visiting with his sister and brother in-law; and lending his brother a hand when needed. He particularly enjoyed his many conversations throughout the years with his grandnephew/godson Stephen, who stood by Michael, watching over him during his final days.

Michael is survived by his sister Gail (O’Brien) Champignie of Whitman; and his brother Bernard “Obie” O’Brien, Jr. and his wife Carol of Whitman. He also leaves behind five nieces and nephews – Laurie O’Brien of Whitman, Tracie (Champignie) Corcoran and her husband Patrick of Hanson; Kevin O’Brien and his wife Jessica of Connecticut; Timothy Champignie and his wife Peggy of Whitman; and Thomas Champignie and his wife Kerry of Whitman. Michael also leaves behind several grandnephews and grandnieces; and a great-nephew and great-niece. He was also the brother in-law of the late Andrew Champignie.

Michael’s family finds great comfort in knowing that he is free from the pain he silently endured for several months, and that he is now reunited with his parents.

There are no visiting hours and burial will be private.
