Obituary

James “Jim” Milton Maxwell
May 24, 1941 – October 4, 2025
James “Jim” Milton Maxwell, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Ojai, CA, on October 4th, 2025. He was 84 years old.
Born in Ventura, CA, to Oliver Milton and Mildred Elaine Maxwell, Jim grew up in the Ojai Valley and graduated from Nordhoff High School in 1959. He continued his education at Ventura College, earning an Associate of Arts degree before embarking on a lifelong career with the United States Postal Service. Jim served as a rural letter carrier for the Ojai Post Office for 35 years, retiring in 1997.
Jim was a man of many passions, with an unshakable love for sports and community. He enjoyed playing golf, tennis, and pool, where his competitive spirit was always on display. For decades, Jim proudly served on the Board of the Ojai Tennis Tournament, helping shape one of the region's most celebrated sporting events.
Even in retirement, Jim remained active in the community. He drove the Ojai Trolley, served as a Marshall at the Ojai Valley Inn, and was involved in numerous clubs and organizations. His greatest joy, however, came from traveling with friends in his RV, creating memories that he cherished deeply.
Jim is survived by his son, Scott Maxwell (Krystan) of Kansas; his daughter, Mandi Roberts (Jim) of Ojai; eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his significant other, Michele Smith of Fillmore. Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Judi Maxwell.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Jim’s caregivers, Rodney, Deirdre, and Nikki, for their compassion and dedicated support during his final weeks.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Parkinson’s Foundation or HELP of Ojai.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Soule Park Golf Course (1033 E Ojai Ave, Ojai, CA) on Friday, November 7, 2025, at 2:00 PM. All who knew Jim are welcome to join in remembering his remarkable life.
